Virtasant is a leading cloud consulting services provider. We heavily focus on lift & shift, cloud-native development, cloud cost optimization, and migration services. As a consulting company, we are often faced with the challenge to create an engineering team in a matter of a week or two. To do that, we have created a secondary support business that runs an engineering talent network and provides staffing services.
Our client is an international media company, and they are looking for a Senior WordPress Engineer to help them evolve a large-scale, mission-driven publishing platform used by millions. This role is hands-on with WordPress as a framework and codebase (not a plugin/theme admin job). You’ll build custom functionality, extend core behavior, and ship clean, well-tested PHP that scales.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain complex web applications using WordPress.
- Work on a large-scale system. Making it faster, more scalable and fault-tolerant.
- Communicate effectively across internal and vendor teams to identify and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
- Eager to collaborate and participate in discussions about system architecture, and/or design.
- Review and improve source code written by developers to meet the project coding standards and maintain the quality bar.
- Juggle current tasks with incoming tasks in a fast-paced priority-based environment.
- Contribute towards the improvement of Engineering discipline through leadership and mentorship.
- 5+ years professional WordPress-focused development, writing custom code (not plugin assembly).
- Strong PHP with deep knowledge of WordPress architecture (hooks, custom functionality, core internals).
- Solid experience with Unit Testing (e.g., PHPUnit) and a clean-code mindset (SOLID, design patterns).
- Competent with JavaScript/React/HTML/CSS to implement end-to-end features.
- Proficiency with Git and modern collaborative workflows.
- Proven experience working in remote, distributed teams with strong English communication (spoken/written).
- Strong ownership mentality—sees features into production and supports post-release behavior (on-call culture as needed).
- Time-zone overlap: ~4 hours with Doha (GMT+3); preference for candidates behind Doha time (e.g., Americas) for better cross-team coverage.
- Experience with Gutenberg block development.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP/Azure preferred; AWS transferable).
- Experience with Docker, build tooling, and Agile practices.
- Exposure to Node.js/GraphQL and/or accessibility standards.
- Comfort using AI-assisted tooling (Copilot, prompt engineering) to accelerate high-quality delivery.
