Job description

We are seeking a creative and analytical Senior UX/UI Designer to join our dynamic Civil Engineering product team. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the user experience of our complex, data-intensive platform. You will be responsible for transforming intricate user requirements into intuitive, efficient, and visually compelling interfaces. Your work will directly influence how our users interact with and derive insights from vast datasets, making you a key player in the success of our product.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the Design Process: Spearhead the end-to-end UX/UI design process for our data platform, from initial concept and user research to high-fidelity prototypes and developer handoff.
  • User-Centric Design: Conduct user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability testing, to deeply understand user needs, behaviors, and pain points, particularly in the context of civil engineering, geospatial data analysis, and project management.
  • Create Intuitive Workflows: Design and map user flows, wireframes, and prototypes that simplify complex data interactions and create seamless user journeys.
  • Craft Compelling Visuals: Develop and maintain a consistent and sophisticated visual design system, including typography, color palettes, iconography, and data visualizations that are both beautiful and functional.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Champion a data-informed design culture. Utilize analytics and user feedback to iterate on and improve the user experience.
  • Communicate and Advocate: Clearly articulate design concepts and rationale to stakeholders and clients at all levels, advocating for user-centered design principles throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with product managers, front and backend engineers.
  • Communicate and Advocate: Clearly articulate design concepts and rationale to stakeholders and clients at all levels, advocating for user-centered design principles throughout the organization.

Requirements
  • Proven Experience: A strong portfolio showcasing your experience in designing complex, data-heavy web applications. Professional experience designing for civil engineering, AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction), or related industries is highly desirable.
  • Client-Facing Skills: Experience interfacing with clients or end-users to gather requirements and present design concepts.
  • Technical Proficiency: Mastery of design and prototyping software such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar.
  • A solid understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and their impact on design implementation.
  • Experience working with mapping libraries and APIs (e.g., Mapbox, Leaflet, CesiumJS).
  • Analytical Mindset: A demonstrated ability to translate complex user needs and technical requirements into simple and elegant design solutions.
  • User Empathy: A genuine passion for understanding users and a commitment to creating designs that meet their needs and exceed their expectations.
  • Excellent Communicator: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Problem-Solver: A proactive and resourceful approach to tackling design challenges.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience working with mapping libraries and APIs (e.g., Mapbox, Leaflet, CesiumJS).
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges and user bases of platforms like GISonLINE, Cesium, or ProjectWise.

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in HCI, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
