About The Role

As a Taxation Specialist, you will serve as a high-touch, member-facing tax strategist for Facet members. In this consultative role, you will be directly on the frontline: meeting one-on-one with members, promptly answering their day-to-day tax questions, demystifying complex tax rules, and translating tax planning into practical, tangible financial wins.

Partnering closely with our CFP® Lead Planners, you will apply Facet's established tax planning philosophy and methodologies to individual member scenarios, empowering members to make confident, tax-optimized life decisions. This is an advisory-only role focused on delivering strategic planning and member education in alignment with firm standards: no tax return preparation or compliance filing is required.

Your Day-To-Day Responsibilities
  • Direct Member Consultations: Lead 10-15 virtual member strategy sessions per week, presenting tailored tax recommendations, answering complex tax questions in real time, and guiding members through key financial decisions.
  • Everyday Member Tax Q&A: Act as the primary tax sounding board for members by promptly answering their inbound questions about personal taxes, withholdings, life-event tax impacts, and IRS notices via our messaging platform, translating technical concepts into clear, reassuring, plain-English guidance.
  • Proactive Tax Plan Reviews: Review member profiles to build current-year liability projections and diagnose tax optimization opportunities (such as Roth conversions, equity vesting events, and real estate transactions) in close alignment with their Planner.
  • Custom Projections & Modeling: Model and present customized scenarios (including multi-year bracket management, withholding adjustments, and estimated tax payment strategies) directly to members.
  • Tax Research & Technical Analysis: Research complex federal and multi-state tax scenarios to architect practical, compliant planning strategies tailored to diverse household situations.
  • Strategic Collaboration with Financial Planners: Coordinate closely with the Director of Specialized Advice and Lead Planners to integrate tax strategies seamlessly into the Facet Way of holistic financial planning.
Commonly Advised Strategies & Domains
  • Roth Conversion Planning: Evaluating complex returns and income streams to identify multi-year conversion opportunities; assessing downstream impacts on IRMAA brackets, ACA subsidies, and Social Security taxation.
  • Charitable Giving Optimization: Structuring high-impact giving strategies, including Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), and appreciated asset gifting.
  • Real Estate & Rental Assets: Advising on cost recovery/depreciation, Passive Activity Loss (PAL) limitations, short-term rental rules, and Section 1031 exchanges.
  • Equity Compensation: Navigating the tax implications of incentive stock options (ISOs), non-qualified stock options (NSOs), restricted stock units (RSUs), and ESPPs, including Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) planning.
  • Small Business & Entity Structure: Providing consultative guidance on entity tax classification (Sole Prop, S-Corp, LLC), pass-through deductions (QBI), and the tax implications of business transitions or liquidity events.

Requirements
  • Active Credential: Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Experience: 5-7+ years of professional experience specializing in personal tax planning, private client advisory, or high-net-worth tax consulting.
  • Member-Facing Excellence: Proven track record of conducting direct client consultations (e.g., managing an active meeting cadence of 10-15 client meetings weekly) with strong empathy, active listening, and the ability to explain complex concepts in plain language.
  • Diagnostic & Modeling Skills: Exceptional ability to analyze Form 1040s and supporting schedules to rapidly identify planning levers, missed deductions, and tax risks.
  • Technical Breadth: Deep knowledge of federal and state individual tax codes, equity compensation, retirement distribution planning, and pass-through taxation.
  • Fiduciary Mindset: A strong commitment to putting members first, personal integrity, and delivering objective financial advice.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation or active pursuit of the credential is a strong plus.
  • Prior experience delivering tax advice within an RIA, fee-only financial planning practice, or wealth management firm partnering directly with CFP® practitioners.
  • Exceptional video presence and written communication skills, with comfort managing multiple client cases simultaneously in a modern, tech-enabled environment.
  • High proficiency with modern tech tools, tax modeling software (such as Holistiplan, BNA, or Corvee), and CRM/workflow systems.

Benefits
  • $110,000 – $150,000 base salary: Determined by experience, knowledge, and skills.
  • Equity (ISO): It is important to us that all employees are shareholders in our mission.

Daily star rating may fluctuate. Companies on Trustpilot aren't allowed to offer incentives or pay to hide reviews and Facet has not made any payments in offer or receipt of any reviews.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
