Overview

LegalZoom Tax Service Delivery is building our in-house 501(c)(3) fulfillment operation. We're

seeking a credentialed tax professional to serve as the technical quality gate and subject-matter

expert for this operation.

In this role, you will review every Form 1023 and Form 1023-EZ application before filing, serve as the named IRS representative on client Form 2848 powers of attorney, manage IRS correspondence, advise on complex nonprofit classifications, and guide the fulfillment teams supporting intake and preparation. You’ll also use Claude and other AI tools to support drafting, review, and process improvement.

This work protects filing quality while establishing the operating procedures and training discipline

needed to scale efficiently as volume grows.

You will

  • Perform technical review of all Form 1023-EZ and Form 1023 applications before filing, serving as the final quality gate before Pay.gov submission.

  • Serve as the named representative on client Form 2848 powers of attorney, provide your own CAF number, and countersign powers of attorney documents as required.

  • Act as the primary IRS contact under those powers of attorney, including managing examiner calls, inquiry letters, and other IRS correspondence.

  • Draft and submit responses to IRS inquiries in partnership with clients and internal teams.

  • Advise on complex issues escalated by intake and fulfillment teams, including public charity versus private foundation classification, 501(c)(3) versus 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(7) fit, reinstatements, and Form 8940 requests.

  • Own ongoing technical training for fulfillment agents supporting the 501(c)(3) process.

  • Build and maintain checklists, scripts, job aids, and training materials that promote consistent, high-quality work.

  • Use Claude and other AI tools to support application drafting, technical review, documentation, and workflow improvement.

  • Partner with Service Delivery leadership on process documentation, quality assurance, operating procedures, and continuous improvement as volume scales.

  • Support escalations and advise Care and Sales teams on accurate, customer-appropriate communication related to 501(c)(3) services.

You have

  • An active CPA license or IRS Enrolled Agent credential in good standing, with authorization to practice before the IRS.

  • An active CAF number or immediate eligibility to obtain one, plus willingness to be listed on client Forms 2848.

  • At least six years of combined tax experience, with a minimum of three years in each area: hands-on tax resolution and IRS representation (notices, correspondence, examiner interactions), and nonprofit/exempt-organizations tax (Forms 1023, 1023-EZ, and 990, including public charity versus private foundation classification and 501(c)(3) versus 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(7) fit determinations).

  • Demonstrated ability to work directly and effectively with the IRS, including examiners, practitioner channels, and e-Services.

  • Experience training non-credentialed staff on technical tax or compliance processes.

  • Strong proficiency with Claude and AI tools generally, with the judgment to incorporate them responsibly into everyday work.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
