Job Summary & ResponsibilitiesSUMMARY:

The Sr. Accountant will be responsible for accounting, taxes, reconciliations, and supporting cash management activities for the United Pacific business, including wholesale and retail operations in the fuel and convenience store industry. This role will focus on multi-state sales and property taxes, preparation of various journal entries and reconciliations and provide support to treasury as requested. This individual may be required to provide input and participate in various projects related to process improvement and automation.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:Tax Preparation Responsibilities include:
  • Prepare and process monthly sales and use tax returns and payments for multiple states. Ensure state tax registration, business license filings and renewals and all other requirements of the states are filed timely.
    • Assist with the filing requirements as we enter and exit new cities and states. 
    • Maintain the yearly calendar showing all due dates for sales and property taxes. business licenses, and any other requirements of the city or states we are conducting business in.
    • Assist in the coordination and preparation for city and state sales and use tax audits.
  • Work on streamlining the tax reporting process and investigate new tax software while fully utilizing technology and tools currently available.
  • Maintain Sales Tax rules and matrix for state and local taxability of products in the current system.
  • Be the point of contact for tax issues and questions including reseller certificates, tax rates, taxability rules, etc. and either know the answer or know how to find out (conduct research).
  • Work with outside tax accountants on tax issues and providing information requested.
  • Correspond with federal, state, and local tax authorities on tax compliance matters.
  • Special projects and other duties are assigned by manager.
Financial Statement Responsibilities include:
  • Participate in the monthly and year-end close functions including: journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, maintenance of the backup schedules and other account analysis.
  • Record monthly journal entries including recurring items, accruals, etc.
  • Work with AP and Treasury to properly record tax payments.
  • Reconcile at a store level tax received vs. remitted based on filings.
  • Perform Balance Sheet reconciliations and general ledger account analysis on a monthly basis.
  • Take appropriate action in order to correct or explain any variances.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned by manager.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/ EDUCATION/ SPECIALIZED TRAINING:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, and solid knowledge of basic accounting principles and analysis.
  • 3 - 5 years of tax accounting background preferably focused on sales, use, excise tax and property tax reporting.
  • 2 - 5 years of general accounting experience.
  • Prior experience with the monthly closing process and related journal entries and reconciliations for tax.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with streamlining tax reporting and analysis and knowledge of sales tax software available.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel plus other accounting software; experience with PDI, including competency with pivot tables and x-lookups.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects and be timely in completion of assignments.
  • Excellent organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand the big picture, as well as, focus on the details.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as, be an individual contributor.
  • Shows initiative and commitment to completion of tasks and maintains a positive attitude at all times.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skill.
  • Ability to provide proof of authorization to work in the U.S. (if hired).
