Overview

Microsoft Quantum is advancing quantum computing through the development of highly specialized hardware and supporting technologies. Our hardware development brings together electrical, mechanical, systems, verification, and manufacturing engineering to solve complex challenges across the quantum computing stack.

We are seeking a Senior Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Designer to contribute to the development of sophisticated electronics used in demanding quantum-hardware environments. In this role, you will translate engineering requirements into robust, manufacturable PCB designs and work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and manufacturing partners from early design through release and verification. You will have the opportunity to apply deep PCB design expertise while helping improve the tools, processes, and methodologies that enable scalable hardware development.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Own complex Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout from engineering requirements through design release, including component placement, signal routing, power distribution, layer stack-up, controlled impedance, and high-density interconnect design.

  • Partner closely with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and other engineering disciplines to translate schematics and system requirements into robust, manufacturable PCB designs.

  • Develop and maintain PCB layouts using Electronic Computer-Aided Design (ECAD) tools such as Cadence Allegro, applying appropriate design constraints, routing practices, and library content throughout the design.

  • Perform and support PCB design reviews, including Design Rule Check (DRC) closure, stack-up and material review, mechanical clearance verification, controlled-impedance requirements, and documentation of design-specific requirements.

  • Collaborate with PCB fabrication and assembly suppliers to address Design for Manufacturability (DFM) requirements, incorporate fabrication feedback, and produce complete manufacturing release packages.

  • Improve PCB design methodologies, libraries, workflows, and automation to increase design quality, consistency, reuse, efficiency, and scalability across hardware-development programs.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
