Radiant is an El-Segundo, CA-based clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Senior Power Systems Engineer

Radiant is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to play a pivotal role in the design and development of Kaleidos electrical systems, including power generation, distribution and grounding systems. This role requires extreme ownership of electrical systems design, analysis, simulation, and component selection. You will prepare construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates. You'll join a dynamic team focusing on the design and development of power conversion and electrical systems converting heat generated from a nuclear reactor to clean, abundant electricity for customers. You'll partner with talented engineers across power electronics, motor design, and integration as well as external vendors, partner organizations, and government agencies. You'll play an instrumental role in building Earth's first mass-produced nuclear reactors.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Design next-generation nuclear microreactor power generation systems through performance, cost, reliability, and trade-offs analysis and engineering.
  • Perform power systems design on a multi-megawatt nuclear reactor.
  • Provide technical leadership to cross-functional team members ensuring successful rollout, testing, and complete validation.
  • Provide guidance, knowledge and expertise to team members conducting power system flow and transient stability analysis.
  • Conduct factory acceptance tests and on-site commissioning of power generation systems to ensure performance and safety.
  • Develop system level schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation for a portable microreactor.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, specialized in power systems.
  • 5+ years of design experience designing high voltage power electrical equipment, integration, and maintenance.
  • Experienced in cable sizing, cable pulling, conduit routing, conductor sizing, grounding principles, protective device selection and coordination.
  • Expert in performing following analysis: grounding analysis, isolation, AC and DC arc flash analysis, harmonic analysis, EMI/EMC analysis, and short circuit analysis.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, specialized in power systems.
  • 8+ years of gas turbine, wind turbine, micro-turbine, or micro-grid electrical systems design.
  • Skilled with micro-grid control, power management, voltage stability, hybrid electric vehicle power distribution, and/or wind power generation.
  • Hands on experience with at least one of following software: ETAP, SKM, Siemens PSSE, ASPEN, CAPE, DIgSILENT, Ansys EMC, or PSCAD.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to achieve company goals.

Employee Benefits for Eligible Employees:

  • Stock: Substantial incentive stock plan for all full time, salaried employees.
  • Medical: 100% up to base silver level plan for employee + 50% dependents, offers up to Platinum plans.
  • One Medical: Sponsored memberships for employees and their dependents.
  • Vision: 100% top tier plan coverage + 50% for dependents.
  • Dental: 100% top tier plan coverage, orthodontia extra, 50% for dependents.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
