Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer develops complex mechanical systems for Divergent’s internally developed Monolith One laser powder bed fusion platform, printers in the same class, next-generation platforms, and adjacent equipment. Serving as the Responsible Engineer for assigned systems and major design efforts, this role leads work from problem definition and requirements through concept development, detailed design, prototyping, validation, release, and machine integration.

The Role
  • Own assigned mechanical systems and major design efforts from problem definition through release, integration, and validation.
  • Translate technical and operational needs into clear requirements, interfaces, constraints, and acceptance criteria.
  • Develop concepts and detailed designs using CAD models, drawings, GD&T, tolerance analyses, engineering calculations, component selections, and bills of material.
  • Apply broad mechanical engineering fundamentals across structures, mechanisms, precision motion, fluids, thermal systems, sealing, enclosures, and machine integration.
  • Evaluate design alternatives and make sound tradeoffs across performance, reliability, safety, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, schedule, and technical risk.
  • Identify design and integration risks and plan and lead appropriate analysis, prototyping, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and design iteration.
  • Lead technical coordination across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and other stakeholders; communicate decisions, status, risks, actions, and required support clearly.
  • Maintain complete technical documentation and drive engineering changes through release and downstream coordination, including procurement, manufacturing planning, validation, and deployment.
  • Support machine integration and fleet investigations when needed, converting relevant findings into durable design improvements and future development priorities.
  • Provide technical guidance, design reviews, and mentorship to other engineers.
  • Contribute to machine architecture, modularization, supplier and contract-manufacturing readiness, and future printer development.
Basic Qualifications
  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop complex mechanical systems from concept through detailed design, build, test, and release.
  • Strong capability in 3D CAD, engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, component selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Broad understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to apply them to unfamiliar or multidisciplinary design problems.
  • Ability to convert ambiguous needs into practical designs and make sound technical decisions with incomplete or evolving information.
  • Hands-on experience developing prototypes and integrating, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional technical work and communicate technical reasoning, decisions, risks, and status with limited oversight.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, design review, or mentorship to other engineers.
  • Ability to perform hands-on work around industrial equipment and occasionally lift or carry up to 25 lb.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
  • Experience with laser powder bed fusion, additive manufacturing, industrial automation, robotics, or other complex capital equipment.
  • Experience designing precision mechanisms, motion systems, fluid systems, thermal systems, vacuum systems, structural assemblies, or machine enclosures.
  • Experience developing new machine platforms or major subsystems through prototype, verification, productionization, or commissioning.
  • Familiarity with engineering change control, configuration management, supplier collaboration, contract manufacturing, or release of production hardware.
Work Environment
  • This is an on-site role performed across office, laboratory, prototype-build, and manufacturing-floor environments.
  • Work involves regular interaction with industrial equipment and may include moving machinery, elevated noise, metal powders, inert gas systems, lasers, and high-power electrical equipment. Required PPE and EHS controls apply.
  • Occasional travel and schedule flexibility may be required during critical design, build, integration, testing, or commissioning activities.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
