In this role, you will be accountable for the technical vision, execution, and business impact of ML applications in League of Legends. You will shape the end-to-end ML engineering strategy, from data and feature pipelines to model development, deployment, evaluation, and operations, ensuring systems are scalable, reliable, and measurable in production. You will partner with development themes’ product and production leaders to enable the development of League of Legends existing and future player experiences.

You will report to the Data Engineering Director of League Insights. This role is based out of our Los Angeles Headquarters.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of highly skilled engineers, driving performance, developing future leaders, identifying growth opportunities, and ensuring strong delivery and outcomes.
  • Define, own, and socialize an engineering vision for the organization, working with cross-functional and engineering leaders to create a long-term organizational and staffing plan aligned with technical and product goals.
  • Contribute to all parts of team leadership, including budgeting, recruiting, hiring, mentoring, performance management, and managing contingent staff.
  • Set direction for MLOps efforts across the ML product lifecycle, continuously improving model quality, efficiency, reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners across LoL PC, including product management and technical production, to deliver scalable, reliable, and high-impact ML-powered solutions.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration within engineering teams, central MLE groups, and across other LoL PC departments.
  • Build stronger cross-Riot MLE craft support and contribute towards ongoing improvements to craft standards.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in applied ML and MLOps, guiding pragmatic adoption of best practices that improve product quality and player impact.
  • Continue to hone your individual skills so you can deliver projects in a Player-Coach dynamic.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale software systems, with significant experience in production ML systems.
  • Strong expertise in computer science fundamentals, including system design, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Experience with Java, C++, Python, or similar languages in large-scale, production environments.
  • Deep knowledge of MLOps best practices, including model lifecycle management, experimentation, monitoring, and deployment at scale.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple teams, departments, and disciplines to create solutions.
  • Experience with project planning, prioritization frameworks, and guiding investment strategies across people, platforms, and systems.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with Responsible AI frameworks, fairness considerations, and long-term player impact measurement.
  • Experience with large-scale experimentation platforms and online evaluation frameworks.
  • Experience leading full-stack teams.
  • Experience leading distributed or remote teams.

For this role, you will find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
