Role Overview

Uber Freight is seeking a Senior Manager, Logistics Analytics & Optimization to lead the design, analytics, and optimization of complex freight networks at scale. This role operates as a strategic owner, managing advanced technical teams to evaluate and achieve commercial business objectives, supporting strategic decisions through rigorous analysis, modeling, and collaboration. Sitting at the intersection of commercial strategy, advanced analytics, and operational execution, you will be responsible for achieving overarching results, delivering analytics outcomes, and driving automation. You will lead a team of advanced professional-level engineers and collaborate with data scientists, translating interconnected business dynamics into scalable, automated solutions. This role partners closely with Product, Operations, Data Science, and Leadership to improve efficiency, service, and profitability across Uber Freight’s network.

What you will do:

People Management & Leadership

  • Manage a team of advanced technical professionals.
  • Set clear expectations, establish KPIs, and effectively delegate to maximize team productivity and ensure goals are met.
  • Coach and develop the team by providing regular, constructive feedback and proactively identifying key experiences that support individualized professional growth.
  • Model resilience and adaptability, explaining the "big picture" to coach team members through uncertainty and fast-paced operational shifts.
  • Build trust by promoting an authentic, positive team culture that values diversity, inclusivity, and unique perspectives.

Strategic Logistics Engineering & Network Optimization

  • Evaluate commercial objectives and leadership asks to design and define the roadmap for analytics projects related to freight routing optimization, capacity utilization, and cost structures across complex transportation networks.
  • Integrate data from various sources and disciplines to drive insights and decisions regarding cost, capacity, operational constraints, and service-level trade-offs while applying optimization techniques.
  • Direct the design of automated analytics frameworks and suggest/implement new procedures that scale across the organization.
  • Identify network inefficiencies and design solutions that improve margin, service reliability, and scalability.
  • Support initiatives related to continuous moves, dedicated fleets, loop-based networks, and specialized routing strategies.

Commercial Decision Support & Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Partner with commercial leadership to deliver scenario analysis and data-backed recommendations aligned with industry best practices, owning the analytical decision-support agenda across both 3PL and 4PL businesses.
  • Promote collaboration and idea-sharing across different departments (Product, Sales, Operations) to drive continuous improvement and better outcomes. Drive connected thinking across Analytics teams, breaking down silos to ensure decision models are adopted into frontline workflows and software systems.
  • Apply a deep understanding of business interconnectedness when analyzing issues, ensuring technical solutions directly translate to margin improvement and account retention.
  • Establish team-wide prioritization and resource allocation frameworks, balancing ad-hoc commercial escalations against long-term network modeling roadmaps while managing team costs, headcounts, and project delivery commitments.
  • Synthesize complex freight economics, optimization outputs, and econometric analyses into structured executive narratives that guide C-suite decisions, align cross-functional leaders, and resolve stakeholder friction.

Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish governance frameworks and institutional documentation standards across the analytics team, ensuring all network models, data pipelines, and analytical tools remain transparent, auditable, and resilient to personnel changes.
  • Suggest and implement new procedures, analytical toolsets, and optimization methodologies across the organization, institutionalizing a culture of continuous learning.
  • Define adoption KPIs and operational feedback loops across commercial and operational teams, directing the iterative refinement of decision products to maximize end-user adoption and measurable bottom-line value.

Data Analysis & Technical Development

  • Conduct deep dive analyses using SQL, Python, Excel (advanced formulas), and GCP tools to support engineering and business decisions.
  • Build and maintain repeatable analytical frameworks for ongoing network evaluation and performance monitoring.
  • Work with large scale datasets, databases, and ETL pipelines in fast moving operational environments.
  • Develop dashboards, KPIs, and operational reporting using Tableau, Power BI, or similar BI tools.

General Skills & Competencies

  • Deep commercial acumen across freight market cycles, contract versus spot dynamics, carrier procurement, logistics network sensitivities, and margin elasticity, applying this domain expertise to guide high-stakes business decisions and complex operational trade-offs.
  • Systems architect capable of structuring ambiguous network design problems, directing teams in formulating optimization, simulation, and predictive models for continuous moves, dedicated fleets, and load matching.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
  • High-impact communication and executive presence, adept at negotiating cross-functional priorities, coaching technical talent, and aligning divergent commercial and engineering perspectives.
  • Sets the standard for executive reporting and visualization, ensuring analytics products present clear decision paths and make analytical outputs intuitive and actionable.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in logistics, transportation, freight brokerage, or supply chain network design.
  • 3+ years of experience directly managing advanced analytical or engineering teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Excel (complex formulas, scenario modeling).
  • Familiarity with databases, ETL workflows, and large-scale operational datasets.
  • Experience building dashboards and operational metrics in Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools.
  • Proven track record of managing costs, overseeing staffing, and achieving upper-level strategic results.
  • Deep expertise in operations research, network optimization, and commercial freight economics.
  • Expertise with optimization methodologies related to routing, capacity planning, and service-level trade-offs.
  • Experience/familiarity with guiding data science or analytics teams in deploying AI-powered decision support tools, conversational analytics, or automated diagnostic workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with VBA or legacy analytical tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Python for data analysis and modeling is a plus.
  • Experience working within the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) ecosystem.
  • Practical experience applying agentic frameworks (e.g., tool-calling, semantic layers) to automate routine commercial reporting and root-cause analysis over transportation datasets.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
