About the Hiring TeamLevel Infinite is Tencent’s global gaming brand. It is a global game publisher offering a comprehensive network of services for games, development teams, and studios around the world.
We are dedicated to delivering engaging and original gaming experiences to a worldwide audience, whenever and wherever they choose to play while building a community that fosters inclusivity, connection, and accessibility. Level Infinite also provides a wide range of services and resources to our network of developers and partner studios around the world to help them unlock the true potential of their games.

What the Role Entails

Tencent is expanding its game user research capabilities in Los Angeles and needs an independent, experienced researcher to lead this initiative. You’ll join a research team based in London, UK, working across titles from several second party studios. You’ll be the first member of the team in our LA research lab, you will run end-to-end research and take over the relationship for a handful of titles.

Joining Tencent Games, you will work alongside award winning studios, making some of the most popular games in the world. Your mission will be to support these studios to deliver on their intended experience by providing timely insights from members of their target audience.

This is a great opportunity to work across many genres, develop our function in a new location and help us achieve greater impact across the organisation.

Please note that this opportunity requires you to be in our Playa Vista office full time. Most of our research is conducted in person, in a dedicated lab.

Responsibilities:

  • Hire a junior researcher to assist you.
  • Establish our LA operations, making sure everything is in place to run research at pace.
  • Build relationships across the organisations to drive relevant and impactful research.
  • Work with studios and external producers to establish their titles’ research strategy.
  • Deliver research end-to-end, from goals setting to report delivery using whatever method you see fit, on PC and mobile titles.
  • Engage with the rest of the Checkpoint user research team to maintain a common culture and ways of working.

Who We Look For

  • You have several years of hand-on experience delivering user research projects in the entertainment field, preferably in video games (PC & mobile), preferably in person in LA.
  • Self-starter and independent, we can rely on you even if your team is on the other side of the world.
  • You are a keen gamer, up to date with a variety of genres and business models.
  • Good communicator, you can express complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • You are passionate about games user research and helping teams build the best possible experience for their audience.
  • You probably studied human-computer interaction, psychology, sociology or a field with a relevant focus on qualitative research.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
