A Little About Us

Yahoo Finance is the largest digital destination for people who want to understand their money, the markets, and the forces shaping the global economy. Our mission is to make finance clear and useful so people understand not only what is happening, but what it means for them. As Yahoo Finance evolves, we want our journalism to carry more voice, color, and energy while maintaining the authority people expect from a financial news organization.

A Little About You

You are a senior designer with a strong point of view and the craft to back it up. You think in systems and execute with precision, whether you're building out the visual identity for a new video series, animating a show open, or designing a newsletter that makes complex financial information feel sharp and inviting. You're open to exploring the use of AI to remove execution bottlenecks, so more of your energy goes toward the creative work that actually matters. You're equally at home working independently and in close collaboration, and you bring a low-ego, high-output energy to everything you make. You'll join a small, close-knit design team reporting to the Creative Director of Yahoo Finance, working alongside fellow designers and in daily partnership with our video, product, social, and editorial teams.

Responsibilities:

Branding and design execution:

  • Translate creative direction into strong, ownable visual identities for Yahoo Finance video series, newsletters, editorial columns, and recurring content franchises.

  • Execute across a range of formats with a consistent, confident design sensibility. Strong typography, layout, and visual hierarchy are the foundation of everything you make.

  • Contribute to and work within established style guides, templates, and design systems, helping ensure each format feels distinct while remaining cohesive within the Yahoo Finance brand.

  • Build and maintain templates in Figma and Adobe CC that support efficiency and consistency across the design and editorial teams.

  • Explore generative AI design tools (e.g., Adobe Firefly, Figma AI) to accelerate conceptual design cycles and scale asset production.

Motion and video:

  • Animate and produce motion graphics for video series, show opens, and digital features, bringing brand identities to life in motion.

  • Contribute to templates and motion packages that support the video team's daily production needs.

  • Collaborate with the video team to ensure motion work feels polished, on-brand, and editorially appropriate.

Collaboration and leadership:

  • Partner with the Creative Director and fellow designers on larger creative initiatives, contributing ideas and iterating quickly on feedback.

  • Work cross-functionally with video, product, social, and editorial teams to deliver design that's right for each platform and audience.

  • Break down complex creative briefs and business requirements into structured action items so that multiple designers and editors can collaborate seamlessly.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a visual, brand, or motion designer, preferably in an agency, media, or tech environment.

  • A strong professional portfolio demonstrating a high-level mastery of typography, layout, visual systems, and motion graphics.

  • Advanced expertise in standard design software including Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop).

  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance in complex, fast-moving environments while leading small project phases.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design tools like Adobe Firefly or Figma AI, and how they can fit into design workflows.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced editorial, digital news, or financial media publication.

  • Advanced knowledge of web motion standards, vector animation, and scalable design templates.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
