Senior Data Engineer, Client Group

Virta Health is on a mission to transform type 2 diabetes and weight-loss care. Current treatment approaches aren’t working—over half of US adults have either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, and obesity rates are at an all-time high. Virta is changing this by helping people reverse their metabolic condition through innovations in technology, personalized nutrition, and virtual care delivery reinvented from the ground up. We have raised over $350 million from top-tier investors, and partner with the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations to help their employees and members restore their health and take back their lives. Join us on our mission to reverse diabetes and obesity in one billion people.

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer to play a pivotal role in building and scaling the data foundation for our high-growth company. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver scalable solutions that optimize operations and data quality, support complex client needs, and expand data access to drive growth. Your work will directly enhance our data accuracy, auditability, and operational efficiency by transforming fragmented, manual processes into robust, automated data products. This role requires a hands-on approach to solving complex data challenges that have a direct impact on the company's data reporting and scalability.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain ELT data pipelines to ensure reliable and efficient data processing. Our tools include dbt, Dagster, and GCP.

  • Build and optimize data models to support analytics and reporting needs.

  • Collaborate with analysts and business stakeholders to create and maintain self-service tools that provide operational and analytical services.

  • Ensure data quality and integrity through testing, validation, and documentation.

  • Monitor and improve database performance, optimizing queries and warehouse costs. Our analytics database lives on BigQuery.

  • Automate and improve our data pipeline workflows for scalability and efficiency.

  • Work closely with product, engineering, and business teams to understand data requirements and translate them into effective solutions.

Must-Haves
  • 5–8 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a similar field.

  • Strong proficiency in SQL and Python.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery), data transformation tools (e.g., dbt), and workflow orchestration (e.g., Dagster or Airflow).

  • Experience designing and maintaining robust ELT pipelines and scalable data models.

  • Familiarity with self-service analytics tools (e.g., Looker) and stakeholder collaboration.

  • Proven ability to solve complex problems and deliver data solutions that drive business impact.

Values-driven culture

Virta’s company values drive our culture, so you’ll do well if:

  • You put people first and take care of yourself, your peers, and our patients equally

  • You have a strong sense of ownership and take initiative while empowering others to do the same

  • You prioritize positive impact over busy work

  • You have no ego and understand that everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of experience

  • You appreciate transparency and promote trust and empowerment through open access of information

  • You are evidence-based and prioritize data and science over seniority or dogma

  • You take risks and rapidly iterate

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
