The Senior Communications and Marketing Director will enhance Movement Labs' support among funders by managing communications, thought leadership, events, and media, while overseeing a small team.
The summary above was generated by AI

Movement Labs is an incubator and consulting firm that uses technology, data, and experimentation to stop fascism and build progressive power. We help progressives win and defeat MAGA extremists through year-round work grounded in research and real-world testing. Our team partners with leading advocacy groups, grassroots organizers, and electoral campaigns to develop innovative tactics, win elections, and shift power for the long term.

As the R&D powerhouse for the progressive movement, we've run over 100 randomized control trials (RCTs) on voter behavior and helped hundreds of organizations increase their impact. We work hard, and the environment evolves rapidly. We are adaptable, nimble, and shift quickly as needed to meet the moment. We are looking for candidates who thrive in this type of environment.

About the Role

The Senior Communications and Marketing Director is a senior leadership role responsible for building the content, relationships, and assets that deepen and expand Movement Labs' support among funders and partners. Your north star is ensuring that donors and partners at every level — from small-dollar supporters to sophisticated major and mega donors and their advisors — understand our impact, trust our rigor, and stay engaged over the long term. You'll need to translate complex research and RCT results into compelling stories, and you'll manage a small team to execute across multiple channels and workstreams.

The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of political programs research, fluency in the Democratic and progressive funder landscape, and the ability to build content and communications infrastructure that scales.

This role is fully remote.

Responsibilities

Donor Communications

  • Partner closely with the Development team to ensure donor-facing proposals, pitch decks, and outreach are grounded in sharp, consistent messaging — developing the overall brand narrative, program stories, data context, and reusable assets that Development draws from when building specific asks.
  • Translate complex RCT methodology and program results into clear, compelling narratives that convey meaning, context, and strategic relevance for funder and partner audiences.
  • Build and maintain a content and asset library — including case studies, one-pagers, and impact stats — that enables Development and Leadership to produce on-brand, high-quality pitches independently and efficiently.

Thought Leadership, Events, Content Marketing

  • Develop and execute a thought leadership strategy that positions Movement Labs and senior staff as go-to voices in political innovation. This includes an owned publishing channel (newsletter, Substack, or blog) on a consistent cadence, a recurring virtual research briefing and webinar series, and flagship research assets like white papers.
  • Produce virtual events — including donor briefings, research showcases, and partner convenings — that bring Movement Labs' work to life and deepen funder relationships between major gift cycles.
  • Orchestrate Movement Labs' presence at ecosystem conferences and convenings, including securing speaking and panel opportunities through relationships with event organizers.

Earned Media & PR

  • Build and cultivate content partnerships with ecosystem newsletters, Substacks, podcasts, and media outlets to amplify Movement Labs' work and reach adjacent donor and partner audiences.
  • Lead earned media strategy, securing coverage in outlets credible to donor and partner audiences, primarily for the Contest Every Race program.
  • Support leadership and spokespeople with interview prep, talking points, and media training.
  • Partner with leadership on crisis communications planning and risk mitigation.

Brand & Digital

  • Oversee brand and website presence, ensuring Movement Labs' external identity reflects the quality and rigor of our work.
  • Direct social media strategy to amplify reach and engagement with donor and partner audiences.

Team Management

  • Manage and mentor a small team of communications staff and contractors, providing clear direction, accountability, and professional development.

Requirements
  • Experience operating in the Democratic and progressive funder landscape, including donor-advisor audiences and major giving infrastructure.
  • Strong command of political programs research. You understand what an RCT is, why it matters, and how to make those findings resonate with funders who range from instinct-driven to highly quantitative.
  • Proven ability to manage people and projects with an equity lens — you set clear expectations, hold people accountable, invest in their growth, and build workflows that are sustainable for the whole team.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills. You can make complex ideas land with clarity and urgency across formats — from a one-pager to a donor pitch to a press release or pitch that will get attention.
  • A direct, confident communications style that earns trust with sophisticated audiences.
  • A collaborative, cross-functional working style — you build strong relationships across teams, communicate proactively in a remote-first environment, and organize internally to achieve goals.
  • Comfort operating in an outcomes-oriented, goal-driven environment where you're expected to exercise judgment with limited oversight.

Benefits
  • Annual salary of $105,000-$115,000 as part of a transparent salary structure with clear levels of advancement, and an additional Cost-of-Living salary Adjustment.
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision benefits, 401(k) matching, and unlimited Paid Time Off.
  • This position is not eligible for the collective bargaining unit.

We’re looking for candidates with a wide range of skills and experience. If you’re excited about the job, even if you don’t match all the characteristics, we encourage you to apply.

Applications submitted by May 6 will be given priority. The application process includes three rounds of interviews and a work sample submission. We hope candidates will start by mid-May.

Movement Labs & CER are an equal opportunity employer. We value a team that reflects the communities we serve and strongly encourage applications from women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, veterans, people with disabilities, and people from rural communities.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
