It's an exciting time at Strategic Comp as we continue to grow our Pacific Region (AZ, CA, CO, NV, OR, and UT). We are adding a remote California Senior Claims Manager to our team!

Does your claims management job feel stale? A process driven organization can lose sight of the true purpose of managing claims -- good outcomes on each claim. Managing in that processing environment can feel robotic.

Strategic Comp is a growing workers’ compensation insurer with dedication to and pride in outstanding claims outcomes.  Our profitability proves that our approach works. Most of our strongest competitors over the years, all of them process driven in their claims handling, are no longer in business.

Our employees at Strategic Comp DO make a difference and feel appreciated for it. In fact, we received 98% rating for overall job satisfaction from the participants in our last employee survey. This clearly indicates the passion and energy our staff has for our company and for the job they do. A big reason for these successes is due to our careful matching of the right job with the right person.

Here’s who we are. Strategic Comp is part of Great American Insurance Group, which was established in 1872. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the operations of Great American Insurance Group are engaged primarily in property and casualty insurance focusing on specialty commercial products for businesses.  The members of the Great American Insurance Group are subsidiaries of American Financial Group, Inc. AFG’s common stock is listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange (“NYSE”) and NASDAQ under the symbol “AFG”.

Here’s what we do. We insure workers’ compensation coverage for large companies, using our deductible program. Our service in claims and loss control is second to none. We’ve found that a large majority of our customers feel the way our employees do. Our renewal retention is 90+%, meaning our customers don’t want to leave us either.

Our approach to claims handling is smart, proactive, well-thought-out, and carefully orchestrated. To make sure that this happens on EVERY claim, we need strong managers overseeing the claims process and customer service.  The result of this approach is that our renewal retention is outstanding, as is our low employee turnover. Once our clients and employees experience our way of working, they want no substitute.

Here’s what you would be doing if hired for the position. Strategic Comp is currently searching for a Senior Claims Manager who will be responsible for the oversight and activities of a team of claim professionals. The person hired for this position will be responsible for the day-to-day work and activities of their team. Additionally, the Senior Claims Manager will be responsible for the performance, development and coaching of their staff, including learning and development of their team.

The Senior Claims Manager will primarily work from their home within the Pacific region and will be required to travel up to 35% of the time including some overnight travel to attend in-person internal claim meetings three times per year.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a unique person in our claims managers. We need someone who has the ability to help and direct when needed, a group of strong, carefully chosen senior level adjusters to:

  • focus on fresh, creative, and quick approaches on every claim resulting in proactive claim resolutions

  • determine on each claim the need for attorneys, surveillance, and nurse case managers, and then assign, direct, and monitor the vendor

  • communicate effectively and develop strong relationships with their team members

  • gain buy-in from our insureds regarding the direction each claim is taking, develop a strategy of how to best mitigate the potential loss through interaction with the claimant, and making sure that light duty jobs are available for quick return to work

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary - requires prolonged sitting, continuous use of computer

  • Travel - requires some overnight travel

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of diverse experience in workers’ compensation claims handling is required

  • Minimum of 4 years of claims management experience in California is required

  • In addition, expert claims handling knowledge and management experience in at least one of the following jurisdictions is preferred: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, or Utah

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred

  • Solid background in coverage analysis, reserving, claims investigation, and litigation management is required

  • Prior work with large or national accounts is required

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
