Tone makes royalty processing simple for modern record labels and everyone who earns money from music. Our intuitive software makes it simple for a lean team to process royalties, and our team of royalty experts is always available to provide support to labels and artists of all sizes. We imagine a future where artists have the freedom to pursue their creative vision and the confidence that they’re being paid fairly for their work. Tone is the platform turning that future into reality.

Coming from the team that built Stem Distribution, Tone is the product of nearly a decade of experience offering best-in-class financial tools to artists and labels. We’ve seen firsthand the impact of paying artists and their collaborators in a clear and timely manner, and we want to empower all artists to expect nothing less. Our mission is to bring a modern finance framework to music professionals, and we’re just getting started.

We’re trusted by artist-run labels and imprints like A-Trak's Fool's Gold Records and 3LAU's Blume Records, and global music brands like Quality Control and COLORS Studios. We’re led by a driven & collaborative team from diverse backgrounds, including senior professionals from Spotify, UTA, Hired, and Apple Music. Our group of investors and strategic advisors includes Carta CEO Henry Ward, Quality Control Music co-founder and COO Kevin "Coach K" Lee, and QED Investors partner Frank Rotman. Our employees include musicians, parents, activists, artists, and more. We’re united by our shared values, commitment to exceptional partnership, and fierce belief in our mission to build solutions that improve the music industry for all.

Our growing Royalty Services team is solving the burden of royalty calculations for independent record labels and making it easier for artists to forecast, collect, and manage what they’re owed. We have years of experience building intuitive financial tools for artists and labels and now we’re applying that expertise to one of the most tedious tasks in the music industry. When we’re done, labels will have more insight into their business, and artists will get paid on time. Trust us—it takes a lot of technology to make it sound so simple.

We're seeking a Royalty Services Coordinator with solid experience in royalties, a passion for music, and an ability to make complex processes easy to understand. You’ll be a part of a team that runs our royalty services, which is our new platform to independent record labels in North America, and help us improve the lives of people who get paid from music.

This role is full-time and fully remote, with occasional in-person get-togethers in Los Angeles for which we cover travel / lodging for out-of-town employees.

What You'll Do:

  • Process master/mechanical royalty statements by ingesting Digital Service Provider (DSP) statements, related costs, metadata, contract terms, and third party income.
  • Work with the royalty, sales, finance, and product teams ensuring customer and business needs are met.
  • Collaborate with royalty and other teams as requested to further develop Tone’s services.
  • Assist with client requests. Produce ad hoc reports, research, calculations, and analytics as needed.
  • Attend training and pipeline meetings.
  • Help independent labels stay independent by bringing fintech to music!

Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • 1 to 3 years of music royalty accounting experience.
  • Direct experience working in the music industry at a label, distributor or DSP.
  • Working knowledge of processing royalties and ability to interpret music contracts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate and convey music royalty information.
  • Experience with royalty accounting software (i.e. Curve, Record Maestro, etc.).
  • A positive team player attitude, as well as the ability to be a successful individual performer.
  • Ability to work cross functionally with external people/teams of different personalities and work styles.
  • Ability to meet and set deadlines.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and meticulous approach to work.

It's a Bonus if You Have:

  • Provided outside royalty accounting services or business management services to labels
  • Passion for numbers and a strong ability to problem solve.

Technologies/Systems/Software You Will Use:

  • Google Workspace.
  • Royalty Account Systems (Preference of Curve).
  • Google Sheets/Excel.
  • Other remote collaboration tools as needed.

Don't match every skill listed? Almost nobody does! Think you're a good fit anyway? Please let us know.

**Tone is an equal opportunity employer, and more than that, actively strives to build and nurture a diverse, inclusive, and equitable team. We celebrate differences and screen for shared values rather than culture fit. We are committed to providing employees with a work environment free of discrimination and harassment.**

An Insider's view of Stem Disintermedia

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

As a working mother of 3 who holds a management position at Stem, it's so refreshing that the organization means what they say when they talk about work life balance! I have been able to work around my families schedules (emergencies, school conflicts, etc.) without exception - all while feeling the full support of my manager, department, and team.

Andrea

Director of Product

What projects are you most excited about?

It is a very interesting time to work at the intersection of music and technology. There are wild inefficiencies across music that can be solved with technology, more specifically financial technology. We are building offerings that can radically change music's market dynamics.

Kristin

President of Stem Distribution

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I showed up at Stem as a fresh-faced postgrad -- the leadership team here has given me dozens of opportunities to take on exciting new projects, work with incredible clients, and manage crucial functions of the business. I've also been fortunate enough to give some of those same opportunities to rising stars on the team over the years.

Bobby

VP of Artist & Label Relations

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

I help my team be creative by providing them with the strategic context they need to drive strategic choices in their work rather than waiting on leadership for guidance. And I provide plenty of space for them to tell me they need more support or more resources.

Charleton

Head of Marketing

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

Making a living as an artist is incredibly challenging, so empowering artists to build their own business using our tools is a really exciting prospect. I'm a big believer that the most impactful cultural and artistic innovations grow out of local arts communities and small businesses, so I'm very enthusiastic about supporting that ecosystem.
