We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Reinsurance Treaty Catastrophe Modeler to join our growing team!

The successful candidate will be responsible for utilizing catastrophe models to accurately assess and quantify the risk and profitability of the Property Cat reinsurance portfolio. You will participate in the reinsurance placement and renewal process and partner closely with the actuarial pricing team, providing crucial insights to support underwriting and management decision-making. This role requires a strong understanding of reinsurance principles, catastrophe modeling software, and statistical analysis.

How You Will Contribute:

  • Data Preparation & Validation: Prepare, validate, and quality-assure exposure data for input into catastrophe models, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Model Execution & Interpretation: Execute catastrophe models, interpret results (e.g., exceedance probability curves, average annual loss, return periods), and identify key risk drivers.
  • Portfolio Management: Contribute to the management of the reinsurance portfolio by providing risk assessments and insights to underwriters.
  • Scenario Development: Develop and analyze custom scenarios to assess potential impacts of specific events or changes in exposure.
  • Model Validation & Development: Participate in the validation and enhancement of catastrophe models, including model parameterization and calibration.
  • Reporting & Communication: Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing model results and communicate findings to underwriters, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with underwriters, actuaries, and other departments to provide comprehensive risk assessments.
  • Research & Development: Stay abreast of industry trends, new modeling techniques, and emerging risks. Participate in projects to help shape and define the company's view of risk for natural catastrophe perils.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in catastrophe modeling, specifically within the reinsurance industry.
  • Proficiency in using at least one major catastrophe modeling platform (Verisk Touchstone, RMS RiskLink, CoreLogic RQE).
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance principles, treaty structures, and underwriting practices.
  • Solid understanding of statistical concepts, including probability distributions, return periods, and extreme value theory.
  • Experience with data manipulation and analysis using software such as SQL, R, or Python.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with stochastic modeling tools such as MetaRisk or ReMetrica desired.
  • Experience with scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, VBA) is a plus.
  • Experience with database management is a plus.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
