Description
Risk Financing sits at the center of how Liberty Mutual transfers risk to the reinsurance market, and its effectiveness depends on a large number of functions moving in step. This role exists to make that happen. As Reinsurance Operations Manager, you will be the connective tissue between Risk Financing and its key partner functions - Enterprise Risk Management, RI Operations, RI Accounting, Legal, Tax, LM Re and the broker community - ensuring that priorities are clearly set, actively managed and consistently executed across all of them.
This is a role for someone who is energized by turning recurring friction into durable process. You will own the definition of the treaty lifecycle and its implementation across the team, contribute to the standard operating procedures that allow placement teams to act with confidence, and take a leading role in renewal preparation and management - including the treaty handover to downstream teams within agreed service levels. You will work across the full lifecycle, from market approval and reinsurer governance through binding, post-placement data delivery and in-force management.
Much of the work involves shaping the agenda of teams you do not manage, so the ability to build credibility, communicate with clarity in writing and in person, and hold a position under senior scrutiny is central to success.
What you'll do
  • Serve as a key operational point of contact between Risk Financing and its partner functions, establishing and maintaining a governed cadence with each
  • Own the treaty lifecycle definition end to end and drive its adoption across the Risk Financing team
  • Author, secure approval for and implement standard operating procedures and standardized templates that remove ambiguity and reduce duplication of work
  • Own operational renewal preparation and management for reinsurance cycles, including new process implementation, training, and monitoring of operational handovers to Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and RI Operations withing tight SLAs
  • Partner with ERM on reinsurer governance, collateral requirements, approved market lists and concentration frameworks, and implement approved changes as business as usual
  • Support regulatory and control processes including SSAP62 risk transfer reviews, transfer pricing documentation and internal audit requests
  • Drive data quality and standardization initiatives with internal teams and external delivery partners
  • Identify and champion opportunities to simplify how the team delivers, including responsible adoption of GenAI tooling

At least 75% of time is spent on a combination of the following responsibilities:
  1. Operational excellence and SOP ownership: Own, maintain and continuously improve Risk Financing standard operating procedures across the treaty lifecycle, ensuring processes are clearly documented, scalable, audit ready and consistently applied globally.
  2. Process optimization and waste reduction: Identify inefficiencies, duplication and bottlenecks across Risk Financing operations, applying continuous improvement methods to simplify processes, reduce manual effort, minimize rework and shorten cycle times.
  3. Automation and simplification: Lead workflow simplification initiatives in partnership with Technology, Data and operational teams, translating strategic priorities into practical improvements.
  4. Data, reporting and insight: Improve data quality, lineage and usability across reinsurance systems and reporting outputs, using descriptive analytics, visualization tools, KPIs and operational metrics to support decision making and executive reporting.
  5. Stakeholder and partner connectivity: Act as a central coordinator between Risk Financing and partner functions including Finance, Claims, Actuarial, Legal, Tax, brokers and reinsurers, ensuring smooth handoffs, clear ownership and aligned timelines.
  6. Governance, controls and risk management: Support operational risk identification and remediation, ensuring controls, documentation and governance are in place to meet internal, audit and regulatory expectations.
  7. Operational performance management: Develop, update and analyze complex metrics used to assess operational performance, productivity, staffing needs, service levels and other measures valuable to Risk Financing leadership.
  8. Audit, review and senior forum support: Prepare materials, insights and recommendations for audits, reviews, governance meetings and senior forums
  9. Innovation and continuous improvement: Champion new tools, ways of working and data-driven practices across Risk Financing Operations, embedding continuous improvement into daily management.
  10. Mentoring and capability building: Provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to less experienced staff, helping embed consistent operational practices across the Risk Financing team.
Qualifications
  • Competencies typically acquired through a Bachelor`s degree or equivalent experience in addition to 8+ years of relevant experience to include reinsurance operations, process improvement, accounting or audit

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
