Project Engineer II - Payload Test - Part Time

Job Description
This position is for an experienced Payload Test Project Engineer and will report to the Test group of the Payload Engineering Department of BAE Systems Space & Missions Systems (SMS).

What You'll Do:

• Collaborate within a dynamic team environment comprising program leaders, engineers, and technicians across various disciplines to seamlessly integrate and rigorously test spaceflight payload hardware.
• Oversee the planning, execution, and documentation of electro-optical payload test activities, encompassing functional, performance, and environmental testing. Provide personnel management, technical guidance, and cost & schedule leadership for AI&T campaigns.
• Utilize engineering experience to actively support proposal development, proficiently crafting scope, cost, and schedule aspects of test design and planning efforts. Demonstrate engineering and project management expertise, playing a significant role in generating compelling, competitive proposals that are closely aligned with client requirements and industry standards.
• Lead role in managing project cost and schedule during design phases of the payload lifecycle, actively tracking labor hours and project milestones with precision to ensure alignment with budgetary and schedule constraints. Deliver regular, insightful reporting on cost and schedule status to stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making and enabling proactive risk management.
• Lead role in managing project execution during the fabrication & assembly, and verification & delivery phases of the payload lifecycle, overseeing mechanical assembly, electrical integration, functional, environmental, and performance testing processes with precision. Actively track progress and milestones, ensuring alignment with budgetary and schedule constraints. Deliver detailed reporting on project status to stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making and enabling proactive issue resolution.
• Lead role in conducting analyses of project cost and schedule actuals during the post-delivery phase of the payload lifecycle, meticulously comparing against initial estimates to identify root causes. Deliver detailed reports and insights to stakeholders, facilitating comprehensive continuous improvement initiatives and providing valuable input for future proposals and execution strategies.
• Demonstrate a understanding of budget development, cost tracking, variance analysis, forecasting, and reporting within Earned Value Management principles. Capable of leading efforts to monitor and control project financial performance, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints and project timelines. Autonomously manage complex control accounts and providing insightful analysis to influence decision-making processes.
• Collaborate with engineers from various disciplines to develop tailored test sets for verifying payload functional and environmental performance requirements.
• Author, review, and maintain integration and test documents as necessary for payload AI&T campaigns, ensuring comprehensive documentation of all testing activities and results.
• Demonstrate a passion for continuous learning and development while also actively mentoring junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment within the team.
• Foster collaboration with internal company contacts, external suppliers, and customers to facilitate technical knowledge exchange. Support coordination efforts with customers and suppliers for program, design, and peer reviews, ensuring effective communication and alignment across the program lifecycle.
• Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
• Perform other duties as necessary.

Remote Work Considered: This position combines in-person collaboration and customer engagement with independent work. Based on multiple factors, remote work may be considered and is at the discretion of the business. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
• May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
• May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

• BS in Engineering or other related technical field plus 8 or more years related experience.
• Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
• Experience in the design, development, and validation of test sets in cleanroom, laboratory, and/or production environments.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (such as Project, Excel, Outlook, and Word)
• Experience in the testing of spaceflight instruments or related aerospace, electrical, mechanical, optical, or thermal hardware, components and systems.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

• Degree(s) in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Thermal Engineering are preferred.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.
• All of the following skills/experiences are desirable:
  • Test experience using software test automation applications and tools (such as: COSMOS and/or LabVIEW).
  • Experience working in an ISO Class 7/8 cleanrooms in proximity to sensitive electro-optic devices is desirable.
  • Aerospace or military experience.

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $132962 - $226035

However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
