Product Software Engineer II

Job Description:

Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology
On any given day at Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology, we're reimagining ways to create magical viewing experiences for the world's most beloved stories while also transforming Disney's media business for the future. Whether that's evolving our streaming and digital products in new and immersive ways, powering worldwide advertising and distribution to maximize flexibility and efficiency, or delivering Disney's unmatched entertainment and sports content, every day is a moment to make a difference to partners and to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

A few reasons why we think you'd love working here:

  • Building the future of Disney's media business: DE&E Technologists are designing and building the infrastructure that will power Disney's media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.

  • Reach & Scale: The products and platforms this group builds and operates delight millions of consumers every minute of every day – from Disney+ and Hulu, to ABC News and Entertainment, to ESPN and ESPN+, and much more.

  • Innovation: We develop and execute groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms and enhance how audiences experience sports, entertainment & news.

The Commerce Application Platforms (CAP) team is looking for a Software Engineer II who will be an outstanding addition to our team. Your main platform will be Apple, where you'll help build the iOS, Apple TV, and visionOS apps for the App Store. CAP owns the commerce experiences subscribers move through on their journey, from signing up and getting started to growth and retention, and we build them for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. You'll write high-quality, well-tested code and work closely with product and design on the customer journeys we own. While Apple will be your home base, ours is a collaborative, cross-platform team. We are looking for candidates who are excited to expand their skillsets and grow into a second platform over time—such as Android, Roku, Native Client Platform (NCP), or Browser-Based Devices (BBD). You don’t need prior experience with these to start. We will give you the time, mentorship, and modern tooling needed to get there, and you will be expected to actively leverage AI tools to help accelerate this learning journey. If you are passionate about writing excellent code, want a voice in how our team puts AI to work, and are ready to make a real impact in streaming, you will thrive here.

Responsibilities

  • Build features for iOS, tvOS and visionOS in Swift.

  • Work across platforms. Ramp on a second platform you're assigned (Android/Kotlin, Roku/BrightScript, NCP/Rust, or BBD/JS-TS) and, within about six months, deliver small features and reviews there on your own with help from platform SMEs.

  • Use AI as a normal part of how you work, both to move faster and to get up to speed on a second platform. Help improve the team's shared AI tooling (rules, skills, and prompts) instead of keeping your own setup to yourself.

  • Maintain a high level of code quality with each feature delivery by including unit, integration, and snapshot tests, and by doing hands-on manual QA, including pulling and running a peer's branch when you review it.

  • Regularly review code from peers for continuous improvements and shared knowledge.

  • Collaborate with other client platform teams own full customer journeys end to end for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN and ensure a great user experience for all Disney+ viewers.

  • Specialize in Apple technologies such as UIKit, SwiftUI, AVKit and StoreKit to build a world-class application.

Basic Qualifications

  • A desire to learn and grow with the team, while also sharing your own insights.

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.

  • 3+ years of industry experience in iOS software development, 1 of which have been spent using Swift

  • At least 2 years of industry experience implementing complex user interfaces using Apple's UIKit or SwiftUI.

  • You will be required to write unit tested code as part of delivering features.

  • Can demonstrate an understanding of Computer Science fundamentals.

  • You have experience in agile processes to help the team be effective and efficient.

  • A passion for code quality.

  • Willingness to grow into working on more than one platform over time, not just a single codebase. Prior cross-platform experience isn't required; the willingness to ramp up is.

  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (for example, Cursor or Claude) in a real development workflow, and good judgment about reviewing and testing AI-generated code before it ships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience contributing to a second language or platform (Kotlin, Rust, BrightScript, or TypeScript a plus).

  • Experience building or tuning shared AI tooling such as rules/skills files, prompt-engineering standards, agent workflows, or automated code-review setups.

  • Familiarity with observability (Datadog) and participating in an on-call rotation.

The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $123,000 - $165,000 per year and in Santa Monica, CA, $117,500 - $157,500. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
