About the Team

OpenAI’s mission is to ensure the responsible and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. In support of that mission, the Marketing team helps deeply understand customer audiences and market dynamics, influence the development of the right products, build sustainable and customer-aligned monetization models, and drive awareness, adoption, and usage across OpenAI’s products and platform.

We take a data-driven approach to understand markets, develop monetization strategies, and uncover customer needs that shape product strategy and messaging. We partner closely with Sales, Partnerships, Product, Engineering, Research, Comms, and Design to deliver a cohesive end-to-end customer experience and lead go-to-market efforts for new product launches across channels.

About the Role

As a Product Marketing Manager, Research & Safety, you will shape how the world understands OpenAI’s frontier research and our approach to developing AI responsibly. You will establish the strategic narrative for some of the company’s most important research themes—including frontier capabilities, safety, preparedness, reasoning, and compute—and translate complex technical work into clear, credible stories for researchers, policymakers, and the broader public, working with cross-functional teams to translate that messaging and reach developers and enterprise.

Working closely with Research, Safety Systems, Policy, Communications, and Product teams, you’ll lead the go-to-market strategy and messaging for major research and safety initiatives. You’ll develop narratives that build trust, translating technical concepts into tangible artifacts and messaging, drive industry understanding of emerging evaluation frameworks, and help communicate OpenAI’s unique perspective on responsible frontier AI development. You’ll also identify creative and non-traditional ways to bring these stories to the audiences that matter most.

In this role, you will:

  • Establish the strategic narrative for OpenAI’s most important research themes, including frontier reasoning, compute, preparedness, RSI, and AI safety.

  • Develop messaging and positioning that translates complex technical research into clear, accessible narratives for diverse audiences.

  • Create initiatives that communicate OpenAI’s perspective on frontier AI and safety through marketing, thought leadership, partnerships, events, and other non-traditional channels.

  • Lead the launch strategy and industry education for frontier evaluation frameworks and help drive understanding and adoption across the AI ecosystem, connecting the dots to broad consumer understanding of the benefits of AI.

  • Own safety and preparedness messaging for major research launches in close partnership with Research, Safety, Policy, and Communications teams.

  • Develop product marketing briefs and narrative frameworks that enable cross-functional teams to tell consistent, compelling stories.

  • Connect research advances to broader conversations around responsible deployment, real-world impact, and OpenAI’s long-term vision for AI.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have a demonstrated track record of translating highly technical research and safety concepts into clear, differentiated narratives for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Have exceptional strategic storytelling and positioning skills, with the ability to shape industry conversations around emerging technologies.

  • Are comfortable navigating ambiguity and making sound decisions in fast-moving, high-visibility environments.

  • Can build deep partnerships across Research, Safety, Policy, Communications, Product, and Marketing to drive alignment on high-stakes launches.

  • Demonstrate excellent judgment when communicating sensitive or nuanced topics, balancing transparency, technical accuracy, and responsible disclosure.

  • Have experience working within a frontier AI research environment, with a deep understanding of topics such as evaluations, preparedness, RSI, reasoning models, and AI safety.

  • Think beyond traditional product marketing and enjoy finding new ways to influence how key audiences understand and engage with frontier AI.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
