We’re looking for an exceptional Product Manager to elevate and evolve Patriot’s Payroll product. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience managing payroll products and the ability to think strategically about where payroll needs to go next. You’re a great listener and communicator who can balance customer needs, business goals, and regulatory constraints—while setting a clear vision for the future of payroll at Patriot.

This role goes beyond keeping payroll running smoothly. You’ll help define the roadmap, identify opportunities for meaningful innovation, and ensure our payroll platform continues to scale with our customers. While this role does not require deep technical expertise, it does require strong payroll domain knowledge, sound product judgment, and comfort leading product strategy.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Setting product strategy and vision: Define and communicate a clear product vision for payroll that aligns with Patriot’s mission and business goals. Identify opportunities to modernize payroll workflows, simplify compliance-heavy experiences, and anticipate how customer needs will evolve over time. Translate long-term strategy into actionable roadmaps and near-term priorities.

Working closely with your Development and Design team: Ensure upcoming work is clearly defined and aligned with both short-term delivery goals and long-term product direction. Communicate the why behind decisions, help teams understand payroll-specific constraints, and identify opportunities to reduce recurring customer issues while maintaining accuracy and compliance.

Developing a deep knowledge of the Customer: Engage directly with customers to understand how payroll impacts their business operations today, and how it should work in the future. Partner closely with Support, Stakeholders, and Training teams to identify persistent pain points and uncover opportunities for differentiation through better workflows, automation, or guidance.

Developing a deep knowledge of the Data: Define and track success metrics to evaluate payroll features and strategic initiatives. Use data to understand customer behavior, validate assumptions, and measure whether changes are improving accuracy, efficiency, and customer confidence. Leverage insights to guide prioritization and iteration.

Developing a deep knowledge of the Business: Build a strong understanding of Patriot Software’s payroll operations, compliance responsibilities, and cross-functional workflows. Partner with stakeholders across Sales, Marketing, Legal, Compliance, Training, and Customer Support to ensure payroll strategy aligns with business objectives and regulatory realities.

Developing a deep knowledge of the Industry: Stay ahead of payroll regulations, tax changes, and industry trends. Monitor how competitors and adjacent platforms are evolving payroll experiences. Use this insight to help shape Patriot’s long-term payroll roadmap and ensure our product remains trusted, competitive, and forward-looking.

AI Mindset: Use AI tools to work more efficiently—researching regulations, analyzing patterns, synthesizing customer feedback, or drafting product artifacts. Explore responsible ways AI could improve payroll workflows, reduce manual effort, and provide smarter guidance to customers and internal teams.

Please note this is a sample of what you’ll be doing. This job requires you to be able to adapt to change quickly in order to deliver an exceptional customer experience. Your duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

What You’ll Need:

  • 5+ years in a SaaS Product Manager role
  • Direct experience as a Product Manager working on payroll products
  • Strong understanding of payroll concepts, workflows, and compliance requirements
  • Experience setting product strategy, defining vision, and translating it into executable roadmaps
  • Experience collaborating with development, design, and QA teams
  • Working knowledge of Agile software development lifecycles and SaaS release management
  • Proven record of delivering successful product launches and evolving products through iteration
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and user feedback
  • Comfort using AI tools in your day-to-day work and curiosity about how AI can enhance payroll experiences
  • Self-directed, organized, and comfortable owning outcomes
  • Strong interpersonal skills—empathetic, collaborative, and customer-focused
  • Open-minded, humble, and a team player
  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • Not open to applicants residing in: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Washington D.C.
  • Core hours: typically 9 am–5 pm EST, Monday–Friday

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
