The Opportunity

At Root, we’ve reimagined car insurance to make it smarter, more equitable, and a better experience for all. Using technology in smartphones, we’re able to measure driving behavior to give our customers the prices they deserve.
As a Product Manager II, you will own a strategic area within our product, partnering with a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, design, marketing, and your peers on the product team to deliver creative solutions that allow Root to grow profitably and offer a better customer experience to the widest range of customers possible.

The ideal candidate will have a strong alignment to our product vision, an analytical mindset, and experience working cross-functionally to identify opportunities and deliver solutions that unlock customer value. This role requires strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to lead effectively across functions. This position reports to the director of product and requires regular interactions with the executive leadership including our founder and CEO.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. This means we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US.

Salary Range: $114,000- $136,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Advocate for customer needs throughout the product development process; if it doesn’t benefit them, it doesn’t benefit us.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—engineering, design, and business
stakeholders—to define and prioritize product features and enhancements for internal tools.

  • Develop product roadmaps that align with organizational goals and market needs, focusing on solutions for user-driven configuration and management.

  • Gather and analyze requirements from internal stakeholders, translating them into functional specifications and actionable user stories.

  • Oversee policy forms and coverage management to ensure compliance with market requirements and maintain competitive positioning.

  • Analyze industry trends, regulatory changes, and market dynamics to inform product decisions and prioritize features.

  • Champion no-code configuration tools to empower stakeholders to manage workflows independently.

  • Provide training and support to users, maximizing the effectiveness of internal systems.

  • Lead a team of engineers through the full product lifecycle, from ideation and design to implementation, testing, and iteration.

  • Maintain continuous discovery and evaluation of new ideas, insights, and feature candidates.

  • Manage dependencies between product areas and devise creative strategies to bring products to market.

  • Monitor the health of your product area using data and customer feedback.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, or a related field; MBA preferred.
3-5 years of experience in product management, preferably within the insurance or financial services industry.

  • Proven experience developing no-code configuration tools for internal business applications.

  • Expertise in customer discovery, planning, and product development processes; deep understanding of customer-centric product practices.

  • Proficient in SQL for analyzing data sets to build the business case for product opportunities.

  • Eager to engage in primary research, listening to and learning from customers to inform product decisions.

  • Strong judgment and the ability to prioritize projects, focusing the team on what matters most.

  • A roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic and a "do-what-it-takes" attitude to efficiently execute and drive results in a fast-paced environment.

  • High-caliber business writing, process mapping, and user storyboarding skills to communicate complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences.

  • Exceptional leadership abilities; naturally collaborative and skilled at influencing without direct authority.

  • Experience with AWS best practices preferred.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
