Hi, we're TechnologyAdvice.

Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, TechnologyAdvice helps millions of B2B technology buyers make smarter decisions by providing trusted research, practical guidance, and connections to the world's leading technology brands. Our work spans 30+ media brands and 50+ newsletters, supported by a global team across the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines.

We're a remote-first company that values curiosity, collaboration, and growth. We invest in our people, embrace AI and new technologies to improve how we work, and create opportunities for team members to build meaningful careers. Many of our leaders have grown from within, including our CEO, who started here as an intern.

We believe great work happens when people feel connected. Through company all-hands, team events, Slack communities, learning sessions, and in-person gatherings, we create intentional opportunities for our global team to collaborate, build relationships, and celebrate successes together.

All positions are open to remote work unless otherwise specified in the requirements below.

The opportunity

We're seeking a Product Engineer with a builder's mindset: someone who naturally spots problems, gets excited about finding solutions, and enjoys turning ideas into working products. You might have founded a startup, launched your own product, built side projects, automated something that frustrated you, or simply be the person who is always looking for a better way to do things.

At TechnologyAdvice, engineers don't just implement requirements or wait for work to be assigned. They work directly with business stakeholders, Product, and other engineers to discover problems worth solving, determine what solutions make sense, and take ownership of delivering measurable results.

You'll work across the full problem-solving lifecycle, from identifying opportunities and understanding business needs to evaluating solutions, implementation, deployment, measurement, and iteration. Sometimes the right solution is a new application. Other times it's improving an existing process, automating manual work, or recognizing that something isn't worth building at all. We value engineers who are just as interested in figuring out what to build and why as they are in actually building it.

AI is a core part of how we work. We expect engineers to use AI throughout their workflows to accelerate research, discovery, prototyping, development, testing, and delivery. We believe AI enables resourceful engineers to experiment faster, tackle more ambitious problems, and create impact well beyond what would traditionally be possible for a small team. Strong engineering fundamentals and sound judgment remain essential to ensuring those solutions are reliable, secure, and maintainable.

You won't be expected to independently navigate every complex opportunity from day one. You'll collaborate with Product, Engineering leadership, and experienced engineers as you develop the judgment to assess opportunities, make tradeoffs, and own increasingly ambiguous problems. What matters is that you take initiative, seek out context, and drive problems forward rather than waiting for detailed instructions.

Success in this role is measured by the business impact you create, your ability to identify and solve meaningful problems, the speed and quality of your execution, and how effectively you use AI and technology to increase your leverage. We care more about whether your solutions create value than how much code you write.

The best candidates are curious, resourceful, action-oriented builders who enjoy experimenting, challenging assumptions, and turning ideas into reality. Whether your experience comes from building products at work, launching your own ventures, or pursuing projects simply because you wanted to see if something could be done, we're looking for people who take pride in solving problems and want to have a direct hand in making a business better.

Location: United States

What you'll do
  • Use AI-assisted development practices to rapidly prototype, validate, and ship production-ready solutions.
  • Work directly with business stakeholders and Product to understand business problems, user needs, constraints, and desired outcomes.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve business outcomes by engaging stakeholders, examining data, questioning existing processes, and investigating problems, not just responding to assigned work.
  • Take ownership of problems from solution definition through implementation, deployment, measurement, and iteration.
  • Build and maintain full-stack applications, backend services, automations, data workflows, and internal tools that create business value.
  • Understand how your work connects to measurable outcomes such as revenue, cost, speed, quality, capacity, risk, or customer experience.
  • Use data, feedback, and product analytics to determine whether shipped solutions are producing the intended results.
  • Exercise sound technical judgment and know when a decision requires additional input because of its complexity, risk, or long-term implications.
  • Work directly with cloud infrastructure and edge platforms, including AWS and Cloudflare.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve system reliability, observability, performance, and operational excellence.
  • Participate thoughtfully in code reviews and contribute to high engineering standards.
  • Continuously experiment with new technologies, AI capabilities, and development practices that can increase your effectiveness and autonomy.
  • Develop the business, product, and technical judgment required to independently own increasingly ambiguous and high-impact problems.
  • Evaluate potential solutions based on expected business impact, effort, risk, and uncertainty. Help prioritize opportunities and recommend when to build, buy, automate, experiment, or take no action.
  • Design small experiments, prototypes, or validation approaches to test assumptions and reduce uncertainty before investing in larger solutions.

Who you are

Product Ownership & Execution

  • Demonstrated ability to understand a business or user problem and translate it into a practical technical solution.
  • Experience owning software through implementation, deployment, and iteration rather than considering the work complete when code is merged.
  • Ability to collaborate directly with stakeholders, ask effective questions, challenge assumptions constructively, and incorporate business context into technical decisions.
  • Curiosity about how the business works and a desire to understand the outcomes your work is intended to create.
  • Ability to operate with increasing independence while recognizing when additional context, expertise, or alignment is needed.

AI-Native Engineering

  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools to improve the speed, quality, or scope of software development.
  • Ability to critically evaluate, test, and refine AI-generated code rather than treating AI output as inherently correct.
  • Interest in continually evolving your engineering workflow as AI capabilities improve.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals that allow you to use AI as leverage without compromising security, reliability, performance, or maintainability.

Technical Expertise

  • Experience building and maintaining production web applications.
  • Comfortable working within modern application frameworks such as Laravel or similar.
  • Experience working with relational databases and writing queries both within and outside of ORMs.
  • Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Cloudflare, or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency with Git-based development workflows, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot production systems and reason across application, data, and infrastructure layers.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in a globally distributed, remote-first organization.
  • Willingness to seek context directly from the people closest to a problem rather than relying solely on written requirements.
  • Receptive to feedback and able to incorporate new information quickly.
  • Self-driven and accountable for delivering results.

Preferred

  • Experience building AI-powered products using LLM APIs, embeddings, RAG architectures, agent frameworks, or related technologies.
  • Experience with experimentation and product analytics platforms such as PostHog or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with our core technology stack, including PHP, Python, TypeScript, Laravel, Astro, Cloudflare, and AWS.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, containerization, or other modern platform engineering practices.
  • Experience building software that improves internal operations, automates manual workflows, or directly affects business performance.
Engineering Culture at TechnologyAdvice
  • We ship frequently — We favor small, incremental changes that allow us to learn quickly.
  • We embrace AI — AI-powered tools such as Cursor, Claude, and ChatGPT are expected parts of the engineering workflow.
  • We understand the problem — Engineers don't just receive requirements; they seek out the context necessary to make good decisions.
  • We own outcomes — Shipping code isn't the finish line. We care whether what we built actually solved the problem.
  • We use judgment — Not every decision needs a process, framework, or escalation. We expect engineers to develop the judgment to make good decisions at the appropriate level.
  • We stay curious — Engineers are encouraged to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions, experiment, and learn.
  • We increase our leverage — We continually look for ways technology and AI can allow a small team to create disproportionate business impact.
Growth to Senior Product Engineer

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
