About the Role

Recurly Commerce is one of the company's most important growth bets, and we're looking for a Principal Product Manager to run it like a business — not just a product. This is a founder-style role for someone who thinks like a mini General Manager: you'll own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Commerce, and you'll also roll up your sleeves to drive it forward across Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Customer teams.

You'll thrive here if you've taken a B2B product from 0 to 1 at a startup, know the Shopify ecosystem inside and out, and are energized — not intimidated — by wearing whatever hat the day requires: strategist in the morning, deal-closer in the afternoon, and hands-on problem-solver by evening.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Own the Business, Not Just the Backlog — Act as a mini GM for Commerce: define the vision, product strategy, and roadmap, and take direct accountability for the commercial success of the product line, not just feature delivery.
  • Build the 0-to-1 Playbook — Bring proven instincts for taking a B2B product from early bets to scaled traction. Move fast, validate cheaply, and know when to double down versus cut losses.
  • Go Deep on Shopify — Use hands-on knowledge of the Shopify ecosystem (APIs, Shopify Plus, app/partner requirements) to build a roadmap that differentiates Recurly Commerce from native Shopify capabilities and third-party competitors.
  • Lead Cross-Functionally, Without the Authority — Be the connective tissue across Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success. Align stakeholders, unblock decisions, and keep everyone rowing in the same direction.
  • Drive GTM as a Partner, Not a Bystander — Work side-by-side with Sales and Marketing on positioning, pricing, and enablement. Get in front of customers and prospects directly to pressure-test ideas and build pipeline confidence.
  • Execute with Discipline — Break big strategic bets into shippable, high-value increments. Own the end-to-end lifecycle from discovery through launch, with a bias toward speed-to-market and reliable delivery.
  • Measure What Matters — Define and own the KPIs that tell you whether Commerce is winning (subscriber growth, retention, merchant health, ACV). Use data to inform roadmap trade-offs and to communicate impact to leadership.
  • Do Whatever It Takes — Whether that's writing a spec, jumping on a customer escalation, drafting sales talk tracks, or debugging a webhook issue with Engineering — you don't wait for it to be "your job" to help solve it.
Why This Role

This isn't a maintenance role on an established line — it's a build role on a product with real momentum and real stakes. You'll have the autonomy of a founder with the resources and distribution of an established company behind you.

RequirementsWhat You Bring
  • 0-to-1 Startup Experience: You've built and scaled a B2B product from the ground up in a startup environment, and you know what it takes to go from an unproven idea to a product customers rely on.
  • Shopify Expertise: Deep, hands-on familiarity with the Shopify ecosystem — API architecture, Shopify Plus, partner/app requirements — ideally with experience in subscription, billing, or commerce-adjacent products.
  • Entrepreneurial, GM Mindset: You think like an owner. You're comfortable with ambiguity, move without waiting for perfect information, and take full accountability for outcomes, not just outputs.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: A track record of driving alignment and results across Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and Customer teams — influencing without relying on formal authority.
  • Core Product Management Craft: Strong fundamentals in vision-setting, strategy, and roadmapping, paired with the execution skill to actually ship what you plan.
  • Technical Fluency: Comfortable in technical conversations with Engineering (APIs, infrastructure, data) — you don't need to write code, but you can credibly reason about technical trade-offs.
  • Communication & Executive Presence: Able to flex your message for a customer, a sales rep, an engineer, or an executive — and to build confidence and trust with each.
  • 7+ years of B2B SaaS product management experience, including direct 0-to-1 ownership.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
