Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, layout work, setup and operate two or more power machine tools such as engine lathes, milling machines jig borers , horizontal boring mills or duplicating machines as a regular assignment.
- The level of work performed on these machines is as described under the Machinist classifications of the specific power machine tools operated.
- Check blueprints or sketch, shop order, and material for completeness and correctness.
- Determine operations to be performed. Plan sequence of machining operations and machines and bench equipment to be used, number of cuts required to obtain desired finish and tolerances, and method of setup in order to make full use of machine capacity and to minimize the amount of machining or number of setups required.
- Layout reference lines and points as required from detail and assembly blueprints, sketches, or sample parts on any assignment in order to check for sufficient finish stock or for reference during machining operations, using precision measuring instruments .
- Compute and locate unknown dimensions of a difficult nature as when compound angles, radii and curvatures or complex contours are involved. Work on highly variable and non-repetitive tooling, experimental and developmental parts where design changes, schedule requirements, or difficult nature of the part or rework requires full utilization of two or more machines and ingenuity in devising unusual machining methods and in improvising and adapting standard tooling to hold and align irregular shaped castings, forgings, and other shapes requiring close and coordinated tolerances and multiple setups .
- Select, mount, and align various specialized machine attachments, standard or special tooling and cutting tools.
- Detuning, set and adjusts machine speeds, feeds and depth of cut.
- Check own machine setup and parts run for conformance to blueprint specifications.
- Grind own cutting tools, except milling cutters. Incidental and in addition to the work above described perform any bench or assembly work required, using all bench equipment such as drill presses, bench and hand grinders, and hand drills, band filers, power saws and machinist's hand tools .
- This classification does not apply to any employee who is assigned to a specific power machine tool
