The Insights discipline exists to empower Rioters to make better, more player-informed decisions. We are an interdisciplinary group of scientists, strategists, and consultants who represent and advocate for players around the world through rigorous analysis, thoughtful framing, and clear storytelling.

PubSports sits at the intersection of Publishing, Esports, and Player Platform — forming the ecosystem that connects players to League of Legends in and around the game.

  • Publishing stewards Riot’s brand and leads paid marketing, creative, community, and influencer programs.
  • Esports creates competitive experiences that engage and grow fandom.
  • Player Platform powers how players access and interact with our games.

We are building a dedicated PubSports Insights team to support League of Legends, focused on deeply understanding how players engage across this ecosystem. As a Principal Insights Analyst, you will operate as a craft and strategic leader. You will set analytical direction, define scalable frameworks, and raise the bar for rigor, clarity, and impact across the discipline. You will partner closely with senior cross-functional leaders to ensure we are asking the right questions, aligning on measurable outcomes, and translating insights into meaningful action.

Your work will shape audience strategy, regional investment decisions, product and platform opportunities, and long-term ecosystem health — ultimately helping create exceptional PubSports experiences for current and future League players worldwide.

Responsibilities:
  • Generate strategic insights that inform high-impact Publishing, Esports, and broader out-of-game (OOG) decisions for League of Legends — spanning content strategy, ROI measurement, regional investment planning, and go-to-market strategy.
  • Partner closely with League product teams and Publishing/Esports leads to design and implement innovative approaches for acquiring and integrating OOG player data, enabling cohesive insights into how out-of-game experiences shape player engagement and how they can be improved.
  • Define and operationalize core Publishing and Esports KPIs for League of Legends, empowering global and regional leaders to optimize performance through scalable, data-driven frameworks.
  • Build and scale dashboards, data pipelines, and experimentation frameworks to uncover key performance drivers, player behaviors, and overall Publishing and Esports performance trends.
  • Design and execute A/B tests and apply causal inference methodologies to rigorously evaluate product and program efficacy, driving measurable impact for players and fans.
  • Translate complex analyses into clear, compelling narratives and recommendations for diverse stakeholders, partnering effectively with both technical teams (e.g., Central PubSports Data) and senior leadership.
  • Model and elevate analytics craft by mentoring fellow analysts, establishing best practices, and raising the bar for analytical rigor and impact across the team.
  • Proactively identify player and business opportunities through deep analytical thinking, structured problem solving, and strategic perspective.
Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field
  • 9+ years of experience in analytics, data science, business intelligence, consulting, or related quantitative roles
  • Demonstrated ability to define ambiguous problem spaces, apply structured business and product frameworks, and deliver actionable recommendations
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python; experience with Databricks, Tableau, or similar data and visualization tools
  • Deep expertise in experimentation, statistical modeling, machine learning, and causal inference applied to real-world product or marketing decisions
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives in partnership with Product, Engineering, Design, Publishing, and Esports stakeholders
  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in gaming, entertainment, esports, or live-service ecosystems
  • Familiarity with League of Legends and the PC PvP space
  • Experience with developing and maintaining scalable data warehouse schemas and architecture to support analytical reporting needs
  • Exposure to global and regional marketing campaign planning and performance measurement

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about players' experiences, this could be your role!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
