A Little About Us

Yahoo Finance is the world’s leading digital destination for financial news, market data, and investment tools. Our Core UI Platforms team builds the high-leverage visualization libraries, charting components, and interactive tools that power our web, iOS, and Android applications globally. We are an innovative team of platform builders focused on pushing the boundaries of real-time data visualization and developer enablement. This role will begin with AlphaSpace but expand to data visualization across the entire Yahoo Finance web application.

Responsibilities

  • Data Visualization Architecture: Architect and maintain advanced, multi-platform financial charts, dashboards, and interactive widgets using React, D3.js, and TypeScript.

  • Developer Enablement & Velocity: Design and distribute reusable component libraries and visualization frameworks to accelerate front-end development across all Yahoo Finance product squads.

  • System-Wide Performance Tuning: Optimize client-side rendering pipelines (Canvas, WebGL, SVG) for complex, high-density, real-time financial streaming datasets.

  • Performance Diagnostics: Utilize AI-powered code analysis and diagnostics to proactively identify performance bottlenecks, layout shifts, and rendering memory leaks in complex visualization components.

  • Technical Standards & Leadership: Set organizational benchmarks for visualization quality, web accessibility (WCAG/inclusive design), robust testing, and clean architecture.

  • AI-Forward Engineering Workflow: Drive developer productivity across the frontend team by championing and setting best practices for AI pair-programming tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) in the writing of visualization components and complex mathematical formulas.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Design, and Data Engineering teams to align the frontend visualization roadmap with broader business metrics and user-experience expectations.

  • Engineering Citizenship: Provide architectural guidance, run technical reviews, and mentor senior developers to scale technical execution across multiple squads.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a clear focus on frontend web application platforms.

  • Deep expertise in React, TypeScript, D3.js, and modern browser rendering technologies (Canvas, SVG).

  • Demonstrated experience building complex, data-intensive, or analytical dashboards delivering high volumes of real-time information to users.

  • Proficiency in leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to optimize visual algorithms, draft unit tests, and accelerate development velocity.

  • Experience designing and publishing reusable design system components, shared frontend packages, or UI frameworks.

  • Strong knowledge of web performance metrics, responsive design, browser-rendering optimization, and caching strategies.

  • Proven track record of leading large cross-team technical initiatives and establishing frontend architectures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with structuring prompts and parsing LLM outputs to dynamically render user-requested UI visual components.

  • A commitment to continuous learning, exploring emerging web graphic technologies (such as WebGL, WebGPU, or Canvas 2D), and adopting AI-enabled development workflows.

  • Experience with real-time financial market data feeds, WebSockets, or time-series data visualization methodologies (such as baseline delta, candlestick, and baseline graphs).

  • Expert understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive visualization design.

  • Excellent communication skills with an interest in data storytelling, financial markets, and quantitative information design.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
