Position Summary

The Continual Commercial Improvement (CCI) Engineer plays a critical role in analyzing and enhancing refinery performance by identifying optimization opportunities across the value chain. This role blends commercial and technical insight to evaluate past decisions, support planning and scheduling, and improve forward-looking strategies. The CCI Engineer collaborates across functions to run backcasts, validate assumptions, close margin gaps, and drive data-informed improvements that unlock long-term value.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the commercial optimization of refinery operations by integrating feedstock selection, intermediate and product placement, and supply chain economics with market analysis and margin insights.
  • Apply a working knowledge of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics to identify, quantify, and communicate strategies that close performance gaps and capture missed opportunities.
  • Collaborate with local and regional value chain teams to align on economic drivers and ensure that planning decisions support enterprise-wide optimization.
  • Develop and maintain executable refinery production plans using linear programming (LP) models; adjust plans in response to margin shifts, demand changes, or operational constraints.
  • Analyze and optimize buy-versus-make decisions by evaluating costs, quality, supply logistics, and market conditions in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Build and refine backcasting models to evaluate historical performance, validate planning assumptions, and uncover margin leakage or optimization opportunities.
  • Conduct structured analyses of historical refinery data to identify trends, performance patterns, and actionable insights. Ensure data accuracy and completeness by working closely with supporting teams.
  • Assist in developing decision-making frameworks and communicate findings and recommendations to key stakeholders through clear and concise presentations.
  • Contribute to project support activities with a focus on data integrity, issue identification, and solution development under guidance.
  • Understand local refinery planning deliverables and scheduling processes, including APS, and contribute to the creation of production plans with support from team members.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
