The Perioperative Director coordinates operations for the OR, PACU, ASC, GI, and SPD, ensures patient care quality, manages staff, implements policies, and oversees performance improvement while complying with healthcare regulations.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job Summary:
Coordinates and directs the operations of the OR/PACU/ASC/GI, and SPD. Ensures quality patient care is given across the continuum with appropriate level of care. Directs performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Provides direction and coordination of Operating Room, PACU, ASC, GI Lab Services, and SPD (May include smaller support departments within PeriOp)
- Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures for appropriate department(s). Ensures policies are clear, concise and available to staff to ensure safety issues are minimized.
- Maintains adequate staff levels that meet unit requirements and state law. Determines staffing requirements and patterns, based on scope of services, complexity of patient acuity and fiscal resources.
- Directs hiring, performance management and development of staff within department(s).
- Directs patient care to ensure patients' needs are met and the facility's policies and procedures are followed. Assuming responsibility for coordination and delivery of 24 hour nursing care on the assigned Departments.
- Ensures quality care is delivered to patients in timely and effective manner.
- Ensures the performance of all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide population specific care to the patients served. Ability to interpret data about patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Ensures procedure is in place for staff to practice the ten medication rights to reduce the potential for medication errors.
- Ensures staff performs head-to-toe assessments on patients and reassessments as per policy.
- Ability to plan and implement Code Blue protocol for responders and step in when needed.
- Maintains performance improvement and quality control activities. Providing education and guidance to staff on performance improvement. Able to plan, organize and participate in orientation and in service training for staff.
- Ensures participation of facility personnel in the formulation of the standards of nursing practices. Implementing standards, annually reviewing and revising, as necessary, to reflect changes in nursing practice.
- Oversees the cleanliness of procedure/treatment rooms.
- Ensures occupational safety for personnel through: Surveillance of safety program; Monitoring of radiation safety principles; and minimizing exposure to hazardous and toxic substances.
- Maintains all equipment; documents preventative maintenance; orders supplies and equipment as needed.
- Ensures compliance with Federal and State regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission and
Regulatory
- Maintains OR with the most up to date AORN and ASHRE guidelines
- Runs operations in accordance with CMS standards
- Works actively with infection prevention and environmental services to ensure OR is cleaned to an appropriate standard
- Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals
Financial
- Develops and recommends department operational and capital budgets. Initiating corrective action for budget variances.
- Practices good stewardship of department resources.
- Actively seeks cost savings opportunities.
OR/PACU/ASC/GI/SPD
- Participates in identification and selection of alternatives, when negative outcomes require corrective action.
- Ensures timeout and consent process is consistently followed.
- Works collaboratively with physicians.
- Drives change when needed.
- Develops and implements strategy for new surgical service offerings.
- Ensures appropriate scheduling and use of the Operating Room suite.
- Ensures a safe, therapeutic operating room environment is maintained for patients and healthcare providers.
- Supervises and oversees the sterilization process. Supervises care of OR suite and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility and operational ability of all items.
- Provides leadership for research and development activities in outpatient surgical care.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education
- Bachelor's Degree of Nursing required.
Preferred Education
- Master's degree preferred.
- Specialty Board Certification
Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications
- Five years recent experience in similar position in acute healthcare setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrates familiarity with Microsoft Office Software as well as Outlook.
- Highly developed organizational skills.
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation
- Current RN license.
- BLS
- Current Fire Card
- ARC (Required within 30 days of employment)
