People Business Partner, Operations,  People Team (Remote)

Full-Time, Remote / Salaried, Exempt

Includes Benefits, PTO, Flexible Schedule, Equity

Steno was built on a simple idea - litigation support shouldn't be an obstacle. Since 2018, we've been delivering on that promise, growing into a business with over $90M raised, a team that continues to scale, and a multi-product platform serving thousands of law firms nationwide. We combine expert and hospitable services, proprietary data, and modern technology in a way no one else in the legal industry can.

Our Operations organization is the engine behind that promise - the team that gets depositions covered, transcripts delivered, and clients served on time, every time. This role sits on the People team as the dedicated People Business Partner to that organization, working at two altitudes at once — close enough to the front line to engage with individual contributors and coach managers through the day-to-day, and trusted enough by senior Operations leaders to be a real thought partner as their part of the business grows.

Who are you?

You're an HR Business Partner who's spent real time inside operational environments — places where the pace of the business and the people running it are tightly linked. You've coached frontline managers through hard conversations, and you've also earned the trust of senior leaders on tough people and team decisions. You're equally comfortable in both rooms.

You lead with strong HR Business Partner fundamentals — coaching, performance management, employee relations, workforce planning — and that foundation makes you a trusted advisor for leaders working through hard decisions about their team. You read people, people data, and organizational signals with equal fluency, and you use several inputs to stay ahead of problems.

You're comfortable being the connective layer between centrally designed people programs and the realities of a fast-moving business unit — translating strategy into something a frontline manager can actually use, while also being a real thought partner to senior leaders navigating tough calls. You know where your judgment ends and where something needs to be escalated, and you lead with what's effective, even when it isn't the popular call.

What you'll drive

  • Partner with Operations leaders -  from senior leadership to frontline managers — on workforce and organizational planning tied to production volume, client demand, and the pace of the business
  • Coach managers, especially first-line and newer managers,on performance conversations and team dynamics, building their capability to handle these situations themselves
  • Identify people risks inside Operations early - attrition patterns, capability gaps, engagement dips — by pairing data with what you're hearing directly from the people closest to the work
  • Innovate centrally built people programs (performance cycles, comp changes, talent processes) to Operations' structure and calendar, and own execution on the ground
  • Handle employee relations matters within Operations with appropriate discretion and sound judgment on what to resolve directly versus escalate
  • Represent People, including recommended team and company procedures, at Operations' planning and leadership discussions as a standing partner
  • Feed real signal from the field back to the People team so programs get built for how Operations actually works

You'll thrive here if

  • You've spent 7+ years as an HR Business Partner, including meaningful time supporting an operational or frontline workforce
  • You've directly supported a business unit through a period of significant growth and can speak to how you handled the people side of it
  • You've coached managers through headcount planning, as well as performance and team issues, and can point to managers who got better because of you
  • You shape strategic and tactical decisions with senior leaders as a genuine thought partner, bringing your own point of view to the table
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity and can tell the difference between what needs your judgment or intervention now and what can wait
  • You bring data into people conversations — attrition, engagement, staffing trends — alongside what you're hearing directly from the people closest to the work
  • You build trust quickly with operational leaders at every level, from frontline managers to senior executives

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
