A Little About Us

Yahoo Finance is the largest digital destination for people who want to understand their money, the markets, and the forces shaping the global economy. Our mission is to make finance clear and useful so people understand not only what is happening, but what it means for them. As Yahoo Finance evolves, we want our visual identity to carry more energy, personality, and ambition. In motion and everywhere else.

A Little About You

You are a motion designer who leads with design thinking. You know that great animation starts with great composition, and you bring that point of view into every frame. You're equally fluent making show opens feel cinematic and turning a complex market chart into a social moment, and you care about the difference between the two. You work quickly without sacrificing craft, thrive in a collaborative newsroom environment, and bring genuine curiosity about financial storytelling to everything you make. You'll join a small, close-knit design team reporting to the Creative Director of Yahoo Finance, working alongside fellow designers and in daily partnership with our video, editorial, and social teams.

Responsibilities

Video and show design:

  • Design and animate graphics for daily and weekly video programming, from market opens and breaking news hits to longer-form feature content.

  • Create show packages, opens, transitions, and lower thirds that are polished, on-brand, and editorially appropriate.

  • Build reusable motion templates and toolkits that support the video team's daily production needs without sacrificing visual quality.

  • Collaborate closely with video producers and editors to ensure motion work integrates seamlessly with footage, pacing, and editorial voice.

Social and promotional animation:

  • Animate assets for social platforms, translating editorial stories and market moments into short-form content that stops the scroll.

  • Support promotional and marketing animation needs across campaigns, series launches, and tentpole events.

  • Contribute to defining the motion language of Yahoo Finance across platforms, helping differentiate our visual identity from competitors.

Collaboration and craft:

  • Partner with the Creative Director and fellow designers on larger creative initiatives, contributing motion thinking early in the process and iterating quickly on feedback.

  • Advocate for quality and consistency in motion design, helping set a high bar for the work across the team.

Qualifications

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating motion graphics work in a video, broadcast, or editorial context, with clear evidence of design thinking behind the animation.

  • Expert proficiency in Adobe After Effects, with strong working knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop.

  • Solid grasp of design fundamentals including typography, layout, color, and visual hierarchy, applied to motion.

  • Experience building motion templates and working within established brand systems.

  • Comfortable working at speed in a fast-paced newsroom environment, managing multiple projects against tight deadlines.

  • Strong communicator with a low-ego approach to feedback and collaborative iteration.

  • A genuine curiosity about financial news and how motion can make complex information feel clear and engaging.

  • An openness to exploring AI-powered design tools where they can accelerate your work.

  • [Bonus] Experience in broadcast or live video production environments, including familiarity with MOGRT workflows.

  • [Bonus] Familiarity with 3D tools such as Blender or Cinema 4D.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
