About this job

We are seeking a Manager, Enterprise Systems who is passionate about delivering technology products and platforms across the organization. The Technology Manager’s primary responsibility is to partner with their business areas and provide technology solutions and services that help deliver CarMax’s strategic mission and plans. This includes development of long and short-term technology solutions that address business goals and deliver improved profitability, efficiency, and an unrivaled customer experience.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Help drive transformation of network operations for a national retail organization, from reactive to proactive. Focus on standardization and documentation, automation and observability to improve operational reliability.

  • Participate in diverse technology projects and influence a team of technologist and developers with experience in technology to create solutions that help meet needs for the company

  • Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with, and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, mentoring other members of the engineering community, and from time to time, be asked to code or evaluate code

  • Collaborate with business partners and deliver robust technology solutions that drive powerful experiences to help millions of CarMax customers get into their dream car!

  • Responsible for implementing a security first approach to all new design and architecture to truly build a DevSecOps Team

  • Participates in 24x7 on-call rotation as a backup for the team and during crisis situations

  • Identify the appropriate goals for the teams, prioritizing objectives and provide a holistic approach to solution recommendations that includes ROI, time to market, scalability as well as alternative recommendations

  • Ability to set clear role expectations and develop associates to reach their full potential – understand their goals and needs, partner in their development, provide advice, feedback, training, and advocacy

  • Continue to grow one’s knowledge base and stay current with industry trends while also formulating a technology plan for each business area based on in-depth understanding of the current business needs and their future direction

  • Act as the key liaison with the customer community and consistently builds positive relationships with customers and contacts in supported business areas

Purpose of the role

The Manager for Enterprise Systems will lead a team of engineers to help enable CarMax’s technology journey using a security first approach.  As a leader within the organization, you will be results-oriented, data-driven, and have a proven track record in influencing outcomes without direct decision-making authority. The Manager will be responsible for short-term and long-term project planning and will directly influence the technology journey within CarMax. The Technology Manager will be comfortable guiding teams to build a robust technology environment and be passionate about availability and security.

The Manager will lead a team of associates by setting performance standards and motivating associates to perform quality work.  The Manager is responsible for identifying high performing talent, gaps in talent, and train and develops associates to close the gaps. 

Qualifications and Requirements

Basic Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in a technology field

  • Preferred at least 3 years of program, project, and team management experience

  • 3 years of experience working with cross functional teams

  • 3 years or experience with Agile practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 3+ years of experience with network technologies

  • 3+ years of experience with enterprise support

  • Operational knowledge and best practices with Telemetry & Monitoring such as Solar Winds Platform, Zabbix, Grafana, Prometheus

  • Support knowledge of routing (BGP & IGRP), switching, VLANs, MPLS and P2P WAN, Cellular and WiFi, Firewalls, Load Balancing and DNS.

Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be considered for this specific role.

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center or Dallas Technology Hub in Plano, TX and have a Hybrid work arrangement.
