Join a team of brilliant, passionate innovators determined to transform healthcare. At BillionToOne, we've built a category-defining, publicly traded company on Nasdaq where transparency fuels trust, collaboration drives breakthroughs, and every contribution moves the needle on our mission to make life-changing diagnostics accessible to all. We don't just aim for incremental improvements; we build products that are 10x better than anything that exists today.

Our scientists, engineers, sales executives, and visionaries are united by an unwavering commitment to changing the standard of care in prenatal and cancer diagnostics. This is where cutting-edge science meets human compassion, and every innovation you contribute helps remove the fear of the unknown from some of life's most critical medical moments.

If you're driven by purpose, energized by innovation, and ready to help shape the future of precision medicine at scale, this is where you belong.

We're seeking an exceptional Lead UX Designer to own the end-to-end experience strategy and execution for our prenatal diagnostic platform, Unity. This role sits at the intersection of cutting-edge genomics and human-centered design - leading the translation of complex molecular diagnostics into seamless, trustworthy experiences that empower clinicians, patients, and operational teams.

As a key member of our product team, you'll lead design from strategic insights through final production, applying systems thinking to design across an interconnected healthcare ecosystem that spans lab processes, electronic health records, provider networks, and patient touchpoints. You'll bridge scientific complexity and clinical reality while guiding design team members and elevating the craft of the entire organization. This is a hybrid position (2-3 days per week at our Menlo Park facilities.)

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Design Leadership
    • Own the complete UX vision and strategy for Unity's patient and provider platforms, from research insights through final implementation
    • Partner with product leadership to shape roadmaps, define priorities, and determine phased approaches that balance user needs, technical feasibility, and business goals
    • Apply systems thinking to visualize and simplify complex relationships between patients, providers, lab processes, payer requirements, and data systems
    • Transform scientific complexity into intuitive digital experiences that build trust and understanding
    • Translate product strategy into actionable design initiatives that connect user journeys with clinical workflow realities
  • End to End Design Execution
    • Lead the complete design process from discovery and research through wireframing, prototyping, user testing, and final production-ready deliverables
    • Create and maintain high-quality design artifacts: user flows, journey maps, wireframes, prototypes, and design system components that capture the full patient and clinician experience
    • Own in-product microcopy and content strategy, ensuring every word builds clarity, confidence, and trust
    • Drive the evolution of Unity's design system, promoting consistency, scalability, and craft in partnership with branding and marketing teams
    • Ensure accessibility, regulatory compliance, and ethical considerations are integrated into every design decision
    • Lead user research initiatives to uncover insights that drive product strategy and design decisions
    • Advocate for evidence-based design grounded in rigorous user research and testing methodologies
    • Synthesize insights from clinicians, patients, and operational teams to identify unmet needs and design opportunities
    • Champion the user perspective in cross-functional discussions, balancing clinical requirements, technical constraints, and business objectives
  • Team Leadership and Collaboration
    • Oversee and mentor junior designers and UX contractors, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and opportunities for growth
    • Build a culture of design excellence, systems thinking, and user advocacy within the design team and across the organization
    • Partner with engineers to ensure the experiential quality of what ships matches design intent and maintains high craft standards
    • Present and defend design decisions to stakeholders across product, clinical, and executive leadership
    • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, clinicians, and genetic counseling teams to align design work with broader organizational goals
    • Identify opportunities and drive initiatives independently while maintaining strategic alignment across teams

Qualifications:

  • 7–10 years of professional experience in UX, product design, or service design
  • 3+ years in leadership roles with demonstrated ability to own design strategy and guide team members
  • Proven track record designing in healthcare, biotech, or similarly complex regulated environments
  • An exceptional portfolio demonstrating systems-level thinking, strategic leadership, and user-centered problem solving from research through final execution
  • Experience in both B2B and B2C healthcare product contexts preferred
  • Background working with AI-powered product experiences a plus
  • Track record of partnering with product management on prioritization and phased delivery approaches
  • Expert-level skills in design and prototyping tools: Figma, Sketch, Miro, or similar platforms
  • Deep understanding of user research methodologies, from generative research to usability testing
  • Mastery of information architecture, interaction design principles, and UX best practices
  • Strong grasp of accessibility standards (WCAG) and healthcare regulatory requirements (HIPAA, FDA)
  • Experience creating and maintaining design systems at scale

Benefits And Perks:

  • Working alongside brilliant, kind, passionate and dedicated colleagues, in an empowering environment, toward a global vision, striving for a future in which transformative molecular diagnostics can help millions of patients

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
