Lead Product Designer

Virta Health is on a mission to transform type 2 diabetes and weight-loss care. Current treatment approaches aren’t working—over half of US adults have either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, and obesity rates are at an all-time high. Virta is changing this by helping people reverse their metabolic condition through innovations in technology, personalized nutrition, and virtual care delivery reinvented from the ground up. We have raised over $350 million from top-tier investors, and partner with the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations to help their employees and members restore their health and take back their lives. Join us on our mission to reverse diabetes and obesity in one billion people.

Role and Impact

As a Lead Product Designer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Virta’s user experience across both clinician and patient-facing products. This role requires strong ownership, strategic problem-solving, and execution skills, ensuring that design is both visionary and grounded in real user needs. You will collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and cross-functional teams to define and execute user-centered solutions that scale.

You’ll also contribute to AI-powered experiences, helping integrate new technologies in a way that enhances the user journey. While AI is an emerging area of focus, your primary impact will come from delivering high-quality, well-structured designs that drive engagement and improve outcomes for our users.

This is an ideal role for a designer who thrives in ambiguity, takes initiative, and can balance big-picture thinking with tactical execution.

Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of the end-to-end design process, from research and concept development to execution and iteration.

  • Drive clarity by distilling complex problems into simple, intuitive, and effective design solutions.

  • Conduct user research to deeply understand the needs and behaviors of our members and clinicians.

  • Develop user-centric designs that balance business goals, technical constraints, and best practices.

  • Collaborate closely with product managers and engineers to define priorities and refine designs based on feedback and data.

  • Facilitate co-creation workshops, ideation sessions and design sprints, leading strategic discussions to align stakeholders.

  • Test and iterate designs rapidly, using qualitative and quantitative insights to refine solutions.

  • Integrate AI-powered features thoughtfully into the user experience, ensuring they provide value and enhance usability.

  • Advocate for design excellence across the organization, contributing to our design system and elevating UX/UI standards.

90 Day Plan

Within your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will do the following:

  • Gain a deep understanding of Virta’s ecosystem, products, and user needs.

  • Analyze existing user journeys, research, and member behaviors to identify opportunities.

  • Master Virta’s design system, tools, and processes, ensuring consistency and efficiency in execution.

  • Work closely with your squad to deliver early exploration of a key feature, applying user insights to improve engagement and usability.

  • Collaborate with the rest of the design team, and internal experts to conduct user research and synthetizing findings that are easily shared with stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring
  • 8+ years of experience in Product Design, with a portfolio that demonstrates clear problem-solving, structured thinking, and high-quality execution.

  • A strong sense of ownership, proactively leading projects and driving clarity in ambiguous situations.

  • A strategic mindset, balancing business goals with user needs while advocating for impactful design decisions.

  • Deep expertise in UX/UI design, with strong interaction design, visual design, and usability principles.

  • Proficiency in Figma and a solid understanding of research methodologies.

  • Collaboration skills, working closely with engineers to ensure seamless execution and technical feasibility.

  • A proactive approach to integrating AI-powered experiences, focusing on their role in improving user workflows.

  • Exceptional storytelling and communication skills, effectively presenting ideas and influencing stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience in healthcare or regulated industries is a plus, but not required.

Values-driven culture

Virta’s company values drive our culture, so you’ll do well if:

  • You put people first and take care of yourself, your peers, and our patients equally

  • You have a strong sense of ownership and take initiative while empowering others to do the same

  • You prioritize positive impact over busy work

  • You have no ego and understand that everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of experience

  • You appreciate transparency and promote trust and empowerment through open access of information

  • You are evidence-based and prioritize data and science over seniority or dogma

  • You take risks and rapidly iterate

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
