Job Summary

Tines is seeking a highly strategic and business-oriented Lead Counsel, Commercial & Compliance to join our growing Legal team. This role will serve as a key legal partner across the company, leading complex enterprise commercial negotiations while helping scale Tines’ global compliance and governance programs. This is initially an individual contributor role with significant cross-functional influence and a clear path toward people management as the Legal function continues to expand.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating in fast-moving, high-growth environments and can balance legal risk, operational realities, customer expectations, and business objectives in a pragmatic and scalable way. This role will work closely with Sales, Security, Product, Engineering, Finance, People, GRC, Support, and Executive Leadership.

What you will be doing:

  • Commercial Transactions & Strategic Negotiations: You will lead complex global commercial negotiations with enterprise customers, strategic partners, vendors, and channel partners. This includes drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a broad range of agreements, including Master Services Agreements, Data Processing Agreements, procurement and vendor agreements, and partner and reseller agreements.

You will serve as a legal advisor on strategic commercial transactions involving security, privacy, compliance, product, and operational risk considerations. You will partner cross-functionally to help drive efficient deal execution while appropriately managing legal and business risk.

You will also help develop scalable contracting playbooks, templates, fallback positions, approval processes, and other resources that support a fast-growing global sales organization.

  • Global Compliance & Governance: You will help design, implement, operationalize, and mature Tines’ global compliance and governance programs. This includes advising internal stakeholders on evolving legal and regulatory obligations across multiple jurisdictions and partnering cross-functionally on compliance initiatives relating to data privacy and protection, AI governance, vendor and third-party risk management, and regulatory and enterprise customer requirements.

You will assist with internal governance frameworks, policy management, risk assessment processes, and customer-facing compliance needs. You will also advise on the contractual, operational, and regulatory implications of new products, features, and technologies.

In partnership with the People team and outside counsel, you will support global compliance-related aspects of operating in new jurisdictions, including employment-related considerations where appropriate.

  • Operational Scaling & Cross-Functional Leadership: You will help build scalable legal and compliance processes, templates, training materials, internal guidance, and self-service resources. You will be expected to operate as a practical, business-oriented partner who can bring structure to ambiguous issues and help the business move quickly while managing risk appropriately.

What you bring with you (required):

  • J.D. degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
  • 7+ years of relevant legal experience, including significant experience in-house and/or at a law firm supporting technology companies
  • Experience supporting global legal, compliance, privacy, and/or governance initiatives
  • Strong understanding of SaaS business models and enterprise customer expectations
  • Ability to balance legal risk with practical business considerations in a fast-moving environment
  • Ability to operate independently while managing multiple priorities simultaneously

What you bring with you (preferred):

  • Experience supporting high-growth or late-stage private technology companies
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, and similar regulatory or customer assurance frameworks
  • Experience with AI governance or emerging technology regulation
  • Employment law experience, particularly in global or multi-jurisdictional environments

Target Annual Compensation: $230-250k salary + equity

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
