Root was founded on the belief that car insurance is broken, and we set out to change it. We’re harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize this archaic, complicated industry. Using machine learning and mobile telematic platforms, we’ve built one of the most innovative insurtech companies in the world.

The Opportunity

We believe that a disruptive insurance company must have a principled quantitative framework at its foundation. At Root, we are committed to the rigorous development and effective deployment of modern statistical machine learning methods to problems in the insurance industry.

As a Lead Actuary I, you will own complex pricing work from problem definition through implementation. In this role, you will lead the development of tools and frameworks to file and deploy auto pricing and product updates more efficiently. You will work cross-functionally with State Product Management and Engineering, and regularly engage with Root’s executive team to align technical insights with strategic priorities.

At Root, we are building a more efficient, data-driven approach to insurance pricing. Our Actuarial Pricing team supports regulatory filings, develops rate indications, evaluates pricing performance, and partners across the organization to help Root make well-informed decisions about risk, growth, and profitability.   To advance this work, we are looking for a Lead Actuary I who can improve and automate existing processes, utilizing AI technologies where appropriate while maintaining rigor and regulatory compliance.

Salary Range:  $107,800 - $134,700 (Eligible for competitive bonus and equity offering)
Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Prepare, review, and support end-to-end rate filings, including actuarial exhibits, supporting documentation, implementation requirements, and responses to regulatory objections.
  • Own complex actuarial pricing projects, including rate level indications, pricing analyses, state expansion work, refunds, and other initiatives that support Root’s growth and profitability.
  • Serve as a filing manager or technical reviewer for filings prepared by other actuaries, providing clear feedback and ensuring that work is accurate, complete, well-supported, and ready for submission.
  • Develop and communicate actuarial recommendations by evaluating data, methodologies, assumptions, business context, and regulatory considerations.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert in one or more areas of actuarial pricing, such as rate level indications, state-specific pricing, rate level analysis, refunds, predictive-model implementation, or filing operations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the filing process and pricing workflow through better documentation, reusable frameworks, automation, and effective use of data and technology, including GenAI.
  • Partner with Product, State Management, Regulatory, Data Science, Engineering, Finance, and other teams to translate technical analysis into clear business decisions.
  • Proactively identify risks, dependencies, and missing information that could affect filing, launch, or implementation timelines.
  • Communicate complex actuarial concepts and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leaders.
  • Coach and support other actuaries through technical collaboration, review, knowledge sharing, and development of team standards.
  • Balance independent execution with effective prioritization, escalating decisions and risks when appropriate while maintaining forward momentum.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 5+ years of experience in the insurance industry, including 3+ years of experience in actuarial pricing, ratemaking, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with personal lines property and casualty insurance, preferably auto insurance.
  • Experience developing or reviewing rate level indications and supporting regulatory rate filings.
  • Experience building actuarial automation, filing tools, or scalable pricing processes.
  • Independently frames complex problems, evaluates options, and communicates clear recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong actuarial judgment and the ability to evaluate methodologies, assumptions, data limitations, and business tradeoffs.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently frame problems, assess options, recommend a path forward, and deliver results across multiple workstreams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly and concisely.
  • Experience with SQL, R, Python, or similar analytical tools.
  • Demonstrated ownership mentality, including proactively identifying opportunities, risks, and process improvements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
  • Successful completion of at least five actuarial exams.

  • Preferred but not required:
    • ACAS designation.
    • Experience with more complex regulatory jurisdictions.
    • Experience with predictive modeling, machine learning, or model implementation.
    • Experience with Git, cloud computing, or production-oriented analytical workflows.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
