Role summary

Affordable Care spends about $13M a year on travel and expense across more than 460 locations.  This analyst makes sure that money is spent under policy, supported by real documentation, and approved by people who actually looked at it.  You will review expense activity, find the patterns that do not look right, document what you find so it stands up to HR and Legal, and recommend fixes to the policies and approval steps that let issues through.

What you will do

  • Review and validate. Test Concur expense reports and card activity (corporate cards, travel and ghost cards, travel agency bookings) against receipts, business purpose and policy.

  • Find the exceptions. Identify duplicate claims (including the same expense paid on a company card and reimbursed again), personal purchases, unsupported charges, meals claimed as travel near an employee's home, receipts that are screenshots or missing, and amounts out of line with what the vendor normally charges.

  • Spot patterns. Analyze spending by employee, location and category to find unusual behavior and weak spots in expense controls.  Build and maintain recurring monitoring reports so reviews are not one-off.

  • Investigate and document. Open a case file, classify findings by strength of evidence (confirmed, policy violation, requires investigation, needs verification), preserve evidence, and hand cases to HR and Legal with a clear, factual write-up.

  • Test the approvers. Note where an approver passed an expense that should have been caught, and feed that back to management.

  • Watch the edges. Reconcile suspended and separated employees against active card and travel profiles.  Flag AP vendor payments or staff bonuses that were routed through T&E instead of the proper workflow.

  • Improve the process. Recommend and help draft changes to T&E policies, approval limits and SOPs.  Report T&E compliance trends to leadership each month.

  • Support audits. Provide samples and documentation to internal and external auditors on request.

What you bring

Require

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • 2 to 4 years in accounting, audit, accounts payable, T&E review or internal controls.

  • Advanced Excel (lookups, pivots, large data sets).

  • Sharp attention to detail and clear written documentation.

  • Sound judgment and strict confidentiality.  You will handle sensitive employee matters.

Preferred

  • Experience with Concur or a similar T&E system and corporate card data.

  • Power BI, SQL, Alteryx or similar tools for data analysis.

  • CFE or CPA, or progress toward either.

  • Experience in a multi location or multi entity organization.

How you will work

Skeptical but fair.  "Fraud" means intent, so you document facts and let HR and Legal draw conclusions.  You work comfortably with Accounts Payable, HR, Legal, Treasury and field leaders without revealing case details to people who do not need them.

How success is measured (targets set with your manager)

  • Share of expense reports and card activity reviewed, and turnaround time per review.

  • Cases documented to a standard HR and Legal can use without rework.

  • Policy and approval changes proposed, adopted and tracked.

  • Dollars recovered or avoided, reported separately from dollars only flagged

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
