Role Summary

This is a 6-month temporary position.

We’re looking for an Instructional Technical Designer who blends instructional design expertise with front-end/web development skills to create engaging, scalable digital learning experiences. You’ll partner with SMEs and stakeholders to turn complex topics into clear learning journeys, then bring them to life using modern eLearning tools and custom HTML/CSS/JavaScript when off-the-shelf templates aren’t enough.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building interactive modules, troubleshooting LMS/eLearning behavior, and elevating learner experience through thoughtful design and clean code.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Design & Learning Experience Development

  • Design engaging digital learning assets (eLearning modules, videos, interactive content, knowledge checks, job aids) aligned to objectives and learner context.

  • Create learning artifacts such as outlines, storyboards, scripts, and objectives to guide development and stakeholder review.

  • Iterate content using feedback, results, and product/process updates to keep training current and effective.

  • Design and maintain learning experiences that remain current amid frequent product and UI updates, proactively refreshing content to prevent obsolescence and learner confusion while maintaining accurate status in project management systems and tracking documentation.

  • Ensure instructional materials are consistently aligned across the active training course library by coordinating updates, retirements, and consolidations with product changes and learning objectives.

eLearning Engineering / Web Development

  • Build and enhance interactive learning experiences using HTML, CSS (including custom CSS), and JavaScript to extend authoring tools and LMS capabilities.

  • Customize layouts, UI components, and learning interactions—ensuring a consistent, accessible, and responsive learner experience across browsers/devices.

  • Package, test, and troubleshoot eLearning deliverables (e.g., SCORM/xAPI packages), resolving issues related to LMS compatibility, tracking, or display.

  • Apply QA practices (cross-browser testing, link/media validation, accessibility checks) and document fixes and technical decisions.

Collaboration & Project Execution

  • Partner closely with SMEs to gather accurate content and guide reviews through structured checkpoints (outline → storyboard → drafts → final).

  • Manage multiple projects with clear timelines, version control, and organized asset management.

  • Maintain course documentation and back-end organization to support ongoing updates and internal visibility.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years designing and developing digital learning experiences (customer education, enablement, or L&D).

  • Demonstrated experience with front-end web technologies:

    • HTML5, CSS3 (custom CSS), JavaScript

    • DOM manipulation, event handling, and debugging using browser dev tools

  • Strong proficiency with at least one major eLearning authoring ecosystem (e.g., Articulate 360, Adobe/Captivate-like tools) and multimedia workflows.

  • Experience working with an LMS and understanding how content behaves inside platform constraints.

  • Solid instructional design foundation (ADDIE or similar), including learning objectives, assessment design, and measurable outcomes.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical topics into learner-friendly content.

Preferred

  • Experience with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design practices.

  • Familiarity with SCORM, xAPI, AICC concepts, and LMS reporting/tracking behavior.

  • Video and motion/interactive tooling (Camtasia, Adobe CC, or similar).

  • Comfortable collaborating with product/engineering-oriented teams and working from technical documentation or SMEs.

Skills & Competencies

  • Learner-first design thinking: builds experiences that are clear, engaging, and outcome-driven.

  • Technical craftsmanship: writes maintainable CSS/JS, uses class-based styling patterns, avoids conflicts, and can debug quickly.

  • Execution & QA discipline: delivers reliable content that works across environments and meets tracking/compatibility needs.

  • Stakeholder management: sets expectations, efficiently incorporates feedback, and keeps projects moving.

Deliverables You’ll Own

  • Storyboards/scripts and interactive module designs from concept through production.

  • Web-enhanced learning components (custom CSS/JS interactions, layouts, reusable templates).

  • Final published learning assets packaged and tested for LMS deployment.

  • Design, develop, and maintain aligned learning experiences that reflect current product functionality and user interfaces. Proactively update content to prevent obsolescence, reduce learner confusion, and ensure accurate course status, version control, and lifecycle information in project management systems.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
