Human Resources Generalist 

M-F 8:30am-5:00pm - Hybrid work schedule 

Salary:    $28.84 - $31.25 per hour

SHIELDS’ mission is to develop, deliver and evaluate culturally sensitive, comprehensive service models that empower and advocate for high-risk families in South Los Angeles.

The Human Resources Generalist manages multiple HR functions including leave of absence and ADA accommodations, workers’ compensation, benefits and COBRA administration, and HR compliance. This role handles personnel action forms (PAFs), HRIS data entry and verification, employment verifications, benefits orientation, payroll and benefits billing coordination, OSHA and workers’ compensation reporting, and compensation and benefits surveys. The Generalist maintains job descriptions, tracks licenses and employee bonus programs, supports policy development and continuous process improvement, and ensures compliance with all federal and state employment laws while partnering with leadership and finance to support organizational goals.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required, along with dependability, professionalism, and a commitment to safety and compliance. Candidates should have working knowledge of HR principles and practices, strong computer skills, and experience using an HRIS system is required. A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Management or related field with 3–5 years of HR experience, 7 years of HR generalist experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. PHR certification is preferred.
