Processes and prepares tissue specimens for pathologist examination by embedding, sectioning, staining, coverslipping, and labeling slides. Performs special stains, maintains specimen records and tissue archives, monitors supplies and reagents, cleans and maintains histology areas and equipment, and supports quality procedures. Enters patient and test information, prepares send-out specimens, identifies instrument issues, and retrieves specimens from surgical and GI departments. Requires ASCP certification and travel between facilities as needed.
The Histotechnician (HT) works under the supervision of the Director and department lead, to process tissue specimens for examination by the pathologists, maintain the areas used for tissue examinations, perform special stains, maintain an accurate log of the specimens, maintain files of blocks and tissue slides, monitor the supplies and reagents as necessary and Rotatescall. Gives excellent customer service.
Responsibilities- Embed, section, make slides, stain, coverslip, and label tissues for examination by the pathologists.
- Inventory, order, and stock supplies and clean pathology grossing areas, frozen section rooms, histology area and maintain all equipment. Maintains policy and procedures are current for the department.
- Perform special stains as directed by the pathologists.
- Take telephone calls and prepare specimens for send out. Perform computer operations necessary to enter patient information, order tests and charge for procedures.
- Recognizes instrument issues, malfunction and takes appropriate action.
- Participates in evaluation of new testing.
- Prepare and maintain the quality of Histology and cytology stains and reagents.
- Maintain files of tissue blocks and slides.
- Pick up specimen from surgery and GI Lab as needed.

Education
- H.S. Diploma - Required
- Associate's Degree - Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree - Preferred
Work Experience
- 2 Years - Related experience - Required
- Training orientation will be up to eight weeks. - Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Histotechnician (HT) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire Or
- Histotechnologist (HTL) - ASCP - Required Upon Hire
Travel Requirements
- Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required

- Ability to see and to distinguish color.
