MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 


The primary job duties this position is responsible for achieving are listed in order of importance.


Position Summary:

The Hematology Supervisor plans and implements the department policies and procedures, and ensures efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence. The Supervisor provides clinical expertise in interpretation of test results as appropriate, including signing out interpretative results. Responsible for communication between laboratory departments and monitoring quality of department operation.

Duties: 

  1. Assures compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to TJC, CAP, OSHA, DPH, CLIA. 
  2. Manages staff, assigning work, establishing performance metrics, monitoring activities and evaluating performance.
  3. Assures accident and incident free conduct of the department operations.
  4. Manages the department from a safety and quality perspective.
  5. Ensures technical clarity with reports and clear communication to customers across a breadth of analytical techniques.
  6. Provides clinical and technical expertise in support of new initiatives.
  7. Assists others with and perform lab techniques.
  8. Manages staff and production to ensure all operations are efficient and cost effective. 
  9. Evaluates operational projects and processes end results to ensure financial and performance objectives are met.
  10. Contributes to the direction of overall laboratory services. 
  11. Responsible for the enrollment of the laboratory in a CMS-approved proficiency testing program for the test performed.
  12. Responsible for the performance of PT samples in accordance with CLIA requirements.
  13. Responsible for the submission of PT results within the time frames established by the PT program.
  14. Responsible for the review of PT results by the appropriate staff and corrective action plans are followed when PT results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.
  15. Ensures that the selection, educating, staffing and disciplining of staff members complies with the standards, policies and practices of the organization.
  16. Evaluates the learning needs of individuals within the department. 
  17. Promotes competency of staff through proper orientation, skill validation and education/training.
  18. Ensures that departmental files are maintained accurately and completed in compliance with established standards.
  19. Special projects as assigned by Management.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education (Indicate minimum education or degree required.)

Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science

Preferred Education (Indicate preferred education or degree required.)

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate minimum years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

  • 3+ years of laboratory experience 
  • Critical analysis and complex problem solving
  • Ability to perform complex laboratory tasks 
  • Computer and LIS proficient
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory and licensure requirements and ensures compliance with regulations
  • Demonstrates competency in principles of performance improvement
  • Exercises accuracy and precision in completion of prescribed tasks

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate preferred years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Strong knowledge in Hematology

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation (List any licensure or certification required and specify name of agency.)

  • CLS License (CDPH/ASCP)
  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required (within 30 days of hire)
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire
