Position Summary

The Part-Time Grants Writer serves on San Diego Rescue Mission’s Development Team, supporting the grants program through funder research, prioritization, proposal writing, submission, and reporting. Working with the full-time Grant Writer and Programs team, this position reviews existing applications and program outcomes, develops compelling grant narratives, helps maintain the annual grants calendar, and submits approximately 3–4 grant applications per month to support annual funding goals. This is a remote, part-time position with periodic on-site meetings for program and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a member of the Development Team, collaborating with the full-time Grants Writer and the Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations.
  • Meet remotely with the full-time Grant Writer to discuss funding strategy, assignments, and progress; attend periodic on-site program, operations, and capital campaign planning meetings.
  • Research corporate and private foundations whose funding priorities align with SDRM programs and plans.
  • Evaluate and prioritize funders based on mission alignment, geography, relationships, and deadlines.
  • Identify and pursue priority grant opportunities, completing approximately 3–4 applications per month to support annual grant revenue goals.
  • Review previous successful grant proposals, program metrics, outcomes, and goals to develop accurate, outcome-focused narratives.
  • Prepare, edit, and submit complete proposals for program support, general operations, and capital campaigns.
  • Stay current on national and San Diego homelessness statistics and relevant program developments.
  • Build relationships with Programs leadership; gather updated program metrics, outcomes, and expansion plans.
  • Share foundation contact information and recommendations with the full-time Grant Writer to support stewardship and relationship development.
  • Utilize and maintain the centralized grants calendar, including funder contacts, funder type, funding interests, request amounts, deadlines, results, communications, and reporting requirements.
  • Provide monthly calendar updates, record grant awards and denials, and track outstanding applications and reporting deadlines.
  • Represent SDRM’s Mission, Vision, and Values; collaborate respectfully with colleagues, guests, and community partners.

QualificationsQualifications

Education:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in grant writing, grant management, and/or development or other journalism roles
  • Nonprofit, ministry, or human services experience preferred

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and strong computer and typing skills (minimum 35 wpm)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Sound judgment, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and willingness to learn in a faith-based environment
  • Strong communication and administrative skills
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Primarily remote, desk-based work involving extended periods of sitting, speaking, listening, and computer use; periodic travel to SDRM sites and meetings requires reliable transportation.
  • Periodic on-site meetings may involve walking, standing, reaching, carrying, and lifting up to 30 lbs. Schedule flexibility, including evenings or weekends, may be required as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
