As a Game Designer at Riot, you’ll work directly with the TCG design and narrative teams to create consistent, high-quality content for our players. You’ll be responsible for your deliverables, both in terms of direction/alignment and scheduling, and also ensuring that they meet the overall discipline quality bar and specific product needs. You’ll lean on years of experience to help build world-class rules documents, card templating, flavor text, and names, in addition to working directly as a game designer on card set teams. You’ll use your craft expertise to enrich the players’ experience of the gameplay and lore of the League of Legends TCG.

As a Game Designer (TCG Editor) on the Riftbound team, you will report to the Game Director. You will work closely with card designers and narrative designers, guiding them through creating card text that is clear, correct, consistent, and concise. You will design and improve the gameplay experience through the lens of content: cards. You will work closely with other team Product Leads and creatives to stay aligned on vision and priorities and balance the requirements of clarity to players and functionality within rules. You will write and revise rules documents to support new gameplay and maintain standards for rules, templating, and creative elements. You will proactively seek opportunities for collaboration, and quickly mediate and resolve any disagreements or misalignments related to card function or creative direction. You will also work closely with the team to strengthen our workflow, preventing opportunities for errors and mistakes.

Responsibilities:
  • Understand the relevant audiences for the game, and from this, calibrate your design expertise to reflect appropriate taste for these audiences
  • Articulate and consider a scope and depth of possible solutions, including possible effects, and collaboratively reach the best solution
  • Discover solutions conceptually through rapid prototyping
  • Implement card content and iterate on it through playtesting
  • Confirm and align the intended gameplay function and narrative goals of products, in collaboration with the appropriate stakeholder/s
  • Facilitate and ensure the execution of rules and narrative craft to the agreed direction, quality standards, and schedule
  • Take ultimate responsibility for the handoff of error-free card text to localization, typesetting, and printers
  • Manage and communicate progress with product teams
  • Maintain good working relationships with product teams, stakeholders, and Localization partners, and actively drive improvements to Riot Games’ multi-language publishing processes
  • Assist in the ongoing development of process documentation, rules documents, templating standards, and style guides
Required Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of professional editing experience
  • 4+ years experience as a professional game designer
  • Broad mechanics and content design ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of TCGs
  • Experience delivering quality work in partnership with other creative disciplines
  • Experience creating content for release in multiple languages
  • Experience maintaining living documents laying out processes and standards
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the League of Legends intellectual property and its various expressions, including games
  • Experience with TCG editing, game rules editing, or other technical editing disciplines
  • Experience working with or playing PvP strategy games
  • Experience developing a competitive or multiplayer game

As part of the application process, candidates will be expected to perform a brief editing test.

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise and a collaborative spirit that prioritizes the delight of players. We will look at your past studies and experience, but for this role, we also look for dedicated people with a personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about players' experiences, this is the role for you!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
