What is Mood?

📈 Mood is **the 4th fastest growing e-commerce company** in the US

We help people buy the highest quality hemp THC products online. We have 600,000+ customers, an average rating of 4.4/5, profitability, and a $100m run rate — and not too long ago, we turned 2 years old!

Our mission is to help people access safe, high-quality THC products tailored to their use case - from reducing discomfort to having a fun night with friends.

We have a small core team with senior employees from Y Combinator backed startups, Smile Direct Club, Rolls Royce, Glovo, and Chlorox.

It’s not our first rodeo (David’s from Texas, after all 🤠) - our founders have built and scaled multi-million D2C companies and held key roles at leading startups. We care deeply about creating great products, hiring a world-class team and creating the environment to do our best work.

With proven product-market fit, we are hiring to help us break the $200m mark and build a generation-defining e-commerce company.

Projecting $100 Million, Hemp Startup MOOD Confounds Expectation

The Opportunity

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct targeted media outreach to secure press from cannabis-friendly outlets that have high domain authority
  • Build and maintain relationships with key reporters and editors in cannabis, lifestyle, and consumer media
  • Strategize and pitch relevant news hooks and product angles
  • Leverage tools like Prowly (or similar) to manage outreach and monitor coverage
  • Collaborate directly with our in-house marketing and SEO team
  • Create a comprehensive tracking system for weekly outreach, backlinks landed, and the value of those placements
  • Land opportunities for ongoing relationships and placements with qualified publishers

You’re a Fit If You:

  • Have 2+ years of digital PR experience — major bonus if you’ve worked with DTC e-commerce brands and/or cannabis brands before.
  • Know how to craft a pitch that actually gets opened — and a subject line that gets clicked.
  • Are self-starting, organized, and thrive in a fast-moving, high-ownership freelance role
  • Have hands-on experience with PR platforms (Prowly, Muck Rack, etc.)
  • Bonus points if you have an extensive knowledge of cannabis
  • Bonus points if you have existing relationships with cannabis publishers, journalists, or similarly relevant contacts

Logistics:

  • Remote, flexible freelance role
  • ~$35/hr, ~10-15 hours/week
  • Ongoing project with room to grow

How To Apply:

  • Submit your resume and cover letter

Our cultural standards

These are the core cultural standards to which we hold ourselves & our team members at Mood:

  • Belief in the mission — we will have served 1 million customers by the end of 2025. We have a lot of work to do. We are obsessed with our customers and are dedicated to the mission.
  • Bulldozing barriers — the world is malleable and we shape it. We truly believe this and act accordingly. We are relentlessly resourceful and are at the mercy of no-one but ourselves.
  • Unwavering integrity — we are at the frontier, so we often live in ambiguity with no trodden path. When we can’t look to others for guidance, we must maintain impeccable ethics and unwavering integrity.
  • Enduring frugality — we are frugal. We hate being wasteful, and we are anti-luxury. We spend our cash wisely & carefully - in a way that would make our grandmas proud.
  • Do what is needed — speed is critical and often, the solutions we need are messy. We are comfortable moving quickly, taking on gritty work, and owning projects from noticing the problem to delivering the outcome.
  • Distaste for incompetence — we’re highly capable. We have a dedication to excellence and reject incompetence. We’re obsessed with our role, with a commitment to compounding self-improvement.
  • Commitment to candor — we believe in open communication and transparency. We are clear & caring communicators, welcoming feedback.
  • Only the paranoid survive — the road of expansion is bumpy. We are not fair-weather sailors; we embrace the storms. However much we’ve already done, however far we’ve already come — all our work is still ahead of us.
  • Keep your head down — we’re boring people doing exciting work. We don’t chase short-term status: we ignore short-term dopamine hits and focus on what matters. Outsiders will underestimate us and we revel in that.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
