About the role

We're looking for a part-time contractor to serve as our Financial Operations Analyst, Tax and own 2026 end-customer tax withholding and information reporting for our FINRA-registered broker-dealer. Your primary points of contact will be the broker-dealer Chief Executive Officer (Head of Operations) and the Financial and Operations Principal (FinOp). You'll work closely with finance, compliance, operations, and engineering to establish the reporting structure and process for 2026 end-customer tax reporting and withholding, using InteliClear and FIS tax reporting. This is a part-time contract engagement from late October 2026 through April 2027, covering the year-end tax reporting season. We expect approximately 20 hours per week on average, varying with the reporting calendar, with heavier hours from January through March.

Atomic is a remote-first company, and this engagement is fully remote; however, candidates must be based in the US or LATAM in the Americas Timezone (GMT-4 to GMT-8).

Key Responsibilities
  • Own overall coordination of 2026 end-customer tax reporting and withholding for brokerage accounts, including backup withholding and nonresident alien (NRA) withholding under Chapters 3 and 4 (FATCA), and the application of treaty rates.

  • Review and validate end-customer W-9 and W-8 tax documentation and corresponding withholding and tax reporting treatment.

  • Reconcile withheld tax to customer account activity and the InteliClear general ledger, and coordinate with the FinOp to ensure timely deposits to the IRS.

  • Work with Atomic teams and the FIS tax reporting team to prepare, review, and file year-end information returns, including Forms 1099 (B, DIV, INT, MISC) and 1042-S, related returns such as Forms 945 and 1042, and any corrections.

  • Respond to customer and partner tax inquiries in partnership with customer support and operations teams.

  • Work with Atomic teams to implement any changes in 2026 reporting due to new or updated tax regulations, and maintain written procedures and controls for tax processes.

  • Document processes, controls, and lessons learned, and prepare a handoff for the next tax season before the engagement ends.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in tax operations, tax information reporting, and withholding at a broker-dealer, bank, custodian, or fintech (withholding agent)

  • Working knowledge of IRS withholding and information reporting rules (Chapters 3, 4, and 61), including Forms W-8, W-9, 1099, and 1042-S

  • Experience reconciling large data sets and resolving discrepancies; advanced Excel skills

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines during year-end reporting season

  • Availability for approximately 20 hours per week on average from late October 2026 through April 2027, with flexibility around peak filing deadlines

  • Advanced-level English for cross-team collaboration

Nice to Have
  • Experience with tax reporting vendor platforms (e.g., FIS) and SQL.

  • Experience establishing a tax reporting process.

  • Experience working with engineering teams on tax data mapping or vendor file specifications.

  • Experience with InteliClear or similar broker-dealer back-office or books-and-records systems.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
