The Hartford's Employee Benefits IT Team is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to modernize enterprise applications across Java, AWS, and GCP-based AI enablement. 

This role partners with business, architecture, and engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable solutions aligned to Hartford standards and technology roadmaps. 

The focus includes AWS application infrastructure and deployment patterns, plus GCP, Vertex AI, Google ADK, and related services for development agents, test agents, and workflow automation. 

Scope and Architecture Context 

AWS infrastructure 

  • Application deployment, CI/CD, observability, production readiness, and reusable cloud patterns. 

IaC and automation 

  • CloudFormation, Terraform/CDK, YAML build specs, Python Lambda, and repeatable provisioning. 

GCP and Vertex AI 

  • Agentic AI, development agents, test agents, and workflow automation using Vertex AI, Google ADK, and GCP services. 

Java engineering 

  • Enterprise Java/J2EE modernization using Spring Boot, services, messaging, XML/JSON, JDBC, and Apache Camel, flink. 

 

Job Description 

  • Modernize enterprise applications using Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, REST/SOAP services, JMS, XML, JSON, JDBC, Flink, and Apache Camel. 

  • Partner with business, architecture, and engineering teams to translate outcomes into secure, scalable, production-ready solutions. 

  • Lead AWS infrastructure standards, reusable cloud patterns, and deployment practices that improve delivery speed and reliability. 

  • Build GenAI and agentic AI solutions, including development agents, test agents, and workflow automation. 

  • Develop Infrastructure as Code and automation using CloudFormation, Terraform/CDK, YAML build specs, and Python Lambda. 

  • Integrate DevOps practices, automated testing, deployment pipelines, monitoring, and operational readiness into delivery work. 

  • Collaborate with architecture and security teams to ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for compliance, resilience, maintainability, and scalability. 

  • Mentor engineers, share technical learnings, contribute to reusable patterns, and help improve overall engineering practices across teams. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline. 

  • 5+ years of hands-on Java/J2EE experience, including Spring Boot, REST/SOAP services, JMS, XML, JSON, JDBC, Flink, Apache Camel, or related frameworks. 

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, cloud automation, build specifications, and repeatable deployment patterns. 

  • Strong software engineering experience designing, building, and supporting secure, scalable, maintainable applications in an enterprise environment. 

  • Strong AWS experience across application infrastructure, including Lambda, SQS, SNS, S3, API Gateway, IAM, CloudWatch, CI/CD, observability, and production readiness; AWS certifications are a plus. 

  • Experience applying GenAI or agentic AI across engineering workflows, including code generation, test automation, workflow orchestration, and productivity improvements. 

  • Ability to communicate across the organization and influence leadership, architecture, product, business, and engineering stakeholders. 

Additional Advantages 

  • Experience with Vertex AI, Google ADK, GCP services, agentic AI frameworks, or AI-assisted engineering tools. 

  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, observability, reliability engineering, and modern DevOps operating models.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$116,000 - $174,000
