Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.

A little about us

Yahoo is a global media and tech powerhouse dedicated to connecting people to their passions. With nearly 900 million users worldwide, we provide a range of services from news and finance to shopping and gaming. Our mission at Yahoo News is to be a guide through the digital wilderness and help users achieve their goals, both big and small. Right now at this important moment in Yahoo’s history, the Originals team (on which you’d sit) is making sure Yahoo News remains an indispensable part of readers’ lives while also working to connect with new audiences and position the brand for the future. Building the best guide to the Internet (and the world) requires building the best team. And so…

A lot about you

Yahoo News is hiring a Senior Editor to help conceptualize and manage cross-functional projects, elevate exciting voices, develop and experiment with new storytelling formats utilizing various types of journalism (reporting, data, visual, video, social—the sky’s the limit). Think of this job as the lead of an editorial incubator. First and foremost, you’ll have experience editing text. But a varied background is ideal, whether that’s having worked on planning conferences, launching podcasts, scripting a video series or putting together a magazine spread. This role spans Yahoo News’s editorial verticals — including entertainment, lifestyle, current events and more — so you’ll be beat agnostic. One day you may be ideating how to uniquely cover summer blockbusters and the next figuring out how to put a face on how tariffs will impact small businesses. With a writer you’ll manage, your small-but-mighty team will be asked to take risks, try new things, ignore the playbook and what’s been done before to help Yahoo build IP, create memorable experiences and grow and attract new audiences.

Your day at Yahoo:

  • Pitch and lead editorial “big swings” that push creative boundaries and elevate the Yahoo News brand
Manage projects from concept through execution — ensuring timelines, quality, and editorial impact are met

  • Create repeatable, recognizable IP that can thrive across core Yahoo’s platforms — site, newsletters, social, video — and beyond

  • Identify and nurture fresh editorial voices — both internally and externally — to expand our storytelling scope

  • Work cross-functionally with social, visuals, video, and curation to craft ambitious, multi-platform packages

  • Use data and audience insights to inform editorial strategy and identify content white space in the market

  • Partner with the sales team to align on priorities and incorporate sponsorship opportunities where appropriate

  • Oversee a small, creative team and help guide experimentation with new formats, from long-form writing to visual explainers — the sky’s the limit

What we’re looking for:

  • 7+ years of experience working in storytelling, with a strong background in journalism, reporting, and editing

  • Proven writing and editing skills — clear, accurate, accessible, and tuned to audience engagement

  • A keen eye for spotting unique angles, emerging trends, and compelling voices

  • Experience leading the development of multimedia content packages

  • Strong editorial judgment, project management ability, and attention to detail from ideation through delivery

  • Demonstrated success managing people and cross-functional collaborations — including with product, design, and sales

  • The ability to translate both qualitative and quantitative data into actionable editorial decisions

  • Exceptional communication skills and a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset

  • A passion for storytelling and a willingness to take risks, experiment, and build new formats from scratch

The material job duties and responsibilities of this role include those listed above as well as adhering to Yahoo policies; exercising sound judgment; working effectively, safely and inclusively with others; exhibiting trustworthiness and meeting expectations; and safeguarding business operations and brand integrity.

At Yahoo, we offer flexible hybrid work options that our employees love! While most roles don’t require regular office attendance, you may occasionally be asked to attend in-person events or team sessions. You’ll always get notice to make arrangements. Your recruiter will let you know if a specific job requires regular attendance at a Yahoo office or facility. If you have any questions about how this applies to the role, just ask the recruiter!

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
