JOB DESCRIPTION

Calling all originals: At Levi Strauss & Co., you can be yourself — and be part of something bigger. We’re a company of people who like to forge our own path and leave the world better than we found it. Who believe that what makes us different makes us stronger. So add your voice. Make an impact. Find your fit — and your future.

Where we lead, others follow. For more than 160 years, we've used the strength of our brands to lead with our values and improve the world. We employ more than 15,000 people globally to support our great brands: Levi's®, Dockers®, Denizen®, Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ and Beyond Yoga.

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead an accomplished team of software engineers in a “you build it, you run it” environment. Your primary responsibility will be to lead your team toward successful and efficient delivery of high-quality software, while promoting a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You’ll ensure the team is aligned with our goals, follows best engineering practices, and upholds DevOps principles, including designing, building, testing, deploying, and monitoring the services they create.

About the Job

As the Engineering Manager, Web Platform & APIs, you will lead an experienced team of engineers responsible for building and operating our next-generation Web Platform—which includes the Backend for Frontend (BFF), server-side rendering (SSR) layers, content architecture, and foundational microservices that power our global e-commerce experiences. You’ll guide your team to deliver high-quality software aligned with our domain-driven design principles, ensuring each service is scalable, reliable, and easily extendable for new markets and third-party integrations.

You’ll collaborate with Product Management, UX, and other partners to implement a roadmap that modernizes our ecommerce platform. As a manager, you’ll foster a culture of ownership, learning, and excellence, empowering your engineers to develop, test, deploy, and monitor applications that delight our customers around the globe.

What You'll Do

  • Mentor: Provide technical guidance and career development support to a team of engineers building the Web Platform.
  • Team Leadership & Culture: Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and trust, ensuring your engineers are empowered to take ownership of their domain.
  • Strategic Planning: Work with Product, UX, and other teams to deliver a roadmap aligned with global ecommerce goals, including expansions to new countries, multi-language content strategies, and integrations with third-party commerce providers.
  • Technical Execution: Oversee the design and architecture of BFF services, SSR solutions, and core microservices. Ensure all code meets standards, balancing new feature development with a clear focus on reliability and performance.
  • Process Management: Improve software development processes, implementing best practices for CI/CD, code reviews, automated testing, and deployment to improve development and deployment cycles.
  • Manage Operations: Champion a DevOps mindset, where the team not only builds but also runs and monitors their own applications in production, ensuring reliability, and performance.
  • Problem Solving: Facilitate solutions to complex technical problems, identifying bottlenecks, risks, and quality concerns, and implementing measures to address them.
  • Performance Monitoring: Report on team performance, goals, and quality metrics, ensuring a high level of transparency and focus on improvement areas. Prioritize talent development and help with hiring new talent and grow engineers that are already at Levi Strauss & Co.™
  • Experience Working with Global Companies: Work with teams around the world and support your global-capable platform.
  • This role will report to the Global Website Engineering Director.
  • This role can be remote.

About You

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in product or platform engineering, with a focus on ecommerce or large-scale digital experiences
  • At least 7 years of hands-on software development experience, with 2+ years in engineering management or technical leadership.
  •  Proficient in one or more programming languages (Java, Node.js, TypeScript, Golang) and knowledgeable about microservices, domain-driven design, SSR, and API gateways
  • Familiarity with DevOps best practices: CI/CD, container orchestration (Kubernetes) and monitoring, plus Agile methodologies.
  • Experience managing and motivating an engineering team.
  • Build a culture that values accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
  • Experience optimizing development lifecycles—implementing code reviews, automated testing, and standardized release processes to remove barriers without sacrificing quality.
  • Experience building scalable, resilient, and observable distributed systems, able to quickly diagnose complex systems issues.
  • Experience providing engineering support to customer support team to resolve any critical customer issues based on growth and cost/benefit analysis.
  • History of partnering with Product Managers, UX Designers, and external vendors (e.g., Payment, PIM, CMS) to provide integrated solutions that accomplish outcomes.
  • Commitment to 24/7 reliability and scalability of platform services.
  • Familiarity with operational tools (monitoring dashboards, logging frameworks), incident management practices, and site reliability engineering (SRE) principles.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
