Role Description

The Dropbox team is growing, and we’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Privacy Engineering team. In this role, you will lead a team of 5–7 engineers dedicated to building privacy-first infrastructure, automation, and user-facing controls that safeguard customer data and ensure Dropbox exceeds expectations around trust and compliance.

You and your team will work on critical systems such as data subject request (DSR) processing, data classification, cookie consent, and privacy settings. You will also help evolve Dropbox’s AI-era privacy posture by leveraging automation and machine learning to anticipate risks and prevent privacy-invasive events.

This role sits at the intersection of Engineering, Legal, Security, and Product. You will partner with these stakeholders to embed privacy into the foundation of Dropbox’s products and proactively comply with global privacy regulations, ensuring Dropbox continues to lead with customer trust.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

Responsibilities
  • You will be responsible for growing and developing an incredible team of hardworking and motivated engineers with high expectations around individual ownership and impact.
  • You will develop a healthy and collaborative culture that embodies Dropbox's values.
  • You will ensure your team delivers extraordinary output, and continuously seeks ways to make an outsized impact.
  • You will set direction for the team, anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges via thoughtful long-term planning.
  • You will help craft technical and product strategy.

Many teams at Dropbox run Services with on-call rotations, which entails being available for calls during both core and non-core business hours. If a team has an on-call rotation, all engineers on the team are expected to participate in the rotation as part of their employment. Applicants are encouraged to ask for more details of the rotations to which the applicant is applying.

Requirements
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent technical experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of industry experience as a software developer, including 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams as an Engineering Manager.
  • Experience implementing or leading efforts around data minimization, differential privacy, data subject rights, and secure data architecture.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with product, legal, security, and other stakeholders to align technical execution with business and compliance needs.
  • Experience managing teams supporting and operating services in production.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) and modern engineering patterns for consent, data flows, and access controls.
  • Experience building or advising on AI/ML privacy practices, including model governance, training data management, or privacy risk mitigation in LLM pipelines.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
